2006 silverado, having trouble with the emissions crap again and it appears this time our tree rats have chewed through the vent on the tank:

The shop is saying the entire tank has to be replaced and from what I can find online they're not making that up. The vent part in question does not seem to be available as a part anywhere, it's only sold with the tank.

Anyone know what that vent is actually called and/or is there a part number I just can't find?

Not replaceable. Tank will have to be replaced.

Much sadness, but not surprising.

Now if I can just figure out what the difference is between the $600 OEM tank I can find vs. the $1100 tank they want to charge me for. 100% markup? come on.

EDIT: it's the shipping, so they're only over-charging by 35%. what a deal.

To their defense, Walmart doesn't sell you stuff at their cost, so why should a shop?

That said, they're not paying shipping for anything. If they do, it's minimal (like under $20). I can't think of a single time I paid more than about $10 for shipping on anything through our regular vendors. So yeah, nearly 100% markup is insane on a $600 part.

Could be fixed with a threaded/barbed brass nipple. Cut the broken plastic barb flush with the domed piece. Drill and tap the plastic for the barb.

While you’re in there make sure there’s not a ton of small charcoal balls in the lines. Those canisters fail pretty often.

The canister is new as of last time this happened, so there is at least that bit of good news.

I have no idea on the details of your truck or do I know if this outfit has what you need in stock. Just passing this along in case it may help your situation.

I personally would take the truck to a different shop if it were me.

Also, if it were my truck and I was spending the money on a new fuel tank, while the tank was out, I would also replace the fuel pump module.

That's actually the place I found the tank. When you go to buy it they add $250+ for shipping.

Have you tried your local Chevy dealer?

For the price quoted might as well put in a titan tank. And double your capacity

I wasn't thinking in jeep-mode, where every failure is an opportunity to upgrade. Dammit, I'm losing my mind. Slowly.

Did not. Last time I tried the local dealer for a part they wanted $400 for something that turned out to be $10. The whole 'we have to sell you the entire assembly to get that one thing' game. Just went to an online dealer and got what I needed right off the parts diagram.

Dealerships really do earn their reputation. Every time I try 'one more time' I find out why. Don't get me started. :)

Kernersville Dodge is probably your best bet for service work. Upstanding folks over there.

Given the shipping price of this big item, I’d still try and call a few of them and have that online price quote page ready to ask if they can match or get closer to what you can buy it for online. I suspect the GMC truck part for the same year would also fit so try a couple of those as well.

Not with domestic but have had good luck doing that with import part dealer counters.

Also some dealers like Hendrick have 10% discount for AAA and military for parts and labor See their ‘specials’ page on their website https://www.citychevrolet.com/service/serviceandpartsspecials/

You could absolutely make something if you really want to. I've clamped all sorts of after market stuff on to fuel tanks using o ring groves on the part

As long as the shop doesn’t mind me buying the part somewhere else and delivering it to them, I could careless what they want to mark it up. But don’t get mad when I say no thank you, I’ll bring you the part when it’s delivered.

I get and understand what you are saying. It cost them to pay someone to call, order, and get the part delivered to them. A small up charge is understandable and I have no problem with it. But the mark up the OP posted is what gives repair shops a bad rep.

Check LKQ in Durham or Clayton.

Bolt a stainless plate, gasket and a brass fitting? Should have room to put your arm inside the tank.

It’s not a straight vent. Has an anti siphon valve in it in case of roll-over.

I think the used tank from car-part.com for $100 would be his cheapest and easiest replacement option. Some salvage yards don’t even pull the pumps so he’d have s spare.

JB Weld is awesome, it doesn’t stick to plastic well at all.
Do Not use it on a plastic gas tank.

If a fuel O-ring or gasket sealing is questionable, YamaBond doesn’t dissolve in gas. It’s used to seal 2-stroke engine cases. Makes sure there’s a strong mechanical bond.

Talked to the insurance company and the shop today and it looks like I'll be sourcing my own tank.

Always and adventure around here.

Or buy used. Here’s an awesome site to find parts at salvage yards.

https://www.car-part.com/mobile/index.htm

Just entered 5.9’ bed and my zip. Plenty used and close in the 100-140 range.

I tried a few of them and when I get redirected to their site the parts aren't showing up. I have the actual part number now (25833022) so I can email around.

OK, tank acquired and at the mechanics for the work. But get this level of crazy....

I went to the acdelco.com parts finder and punched in the part number. It shows it 'in stock' at a bunch of dealers around me at wildly varying prices, so I start calling. None of them actually have it, they all have to order it. So.. the parts finder web site is bogus on inventory. I figure if I have to order, I'll just pick the cheapest dealer in a reasonable driving distance and try it. Closer dealers wanted $750-1100, the one out in Wilson shows it for $500. I put it in the cart and go to check out and it has a spot for 'coupon code' and also a link to get coupon codes. One was 10% off anything over $100. I pick that. I complete the checkout and my card gets charged $501.17 (10% but then sales tax), and I get an email saying I'll get an email when it ships.

Last night I got an email saying it shipped. This morning I got an email saying it arrived and to come get it. I called, they really did have it. I drove out, picked it up and dropped it off at the mechanic.

Here's the dumb thing, it came from Charlotte. So no dealer actually had it, but they all wanted a bunch of extra money for the privilege of picking it up at their parts department? It would be different if anyone actually had one, but they're all just a drop ship location. The tank had to drive by many closer dealers just to get to the cheap one, and then I had to burn gas to go chase it down. Lots of wasted effort just to up-charge for convenience.

So random.
