Awesome man, welcome to the hobby that will consume your mind and take your money. Like the Borg, resistance is futile.

Welcome to the club.

In the olden days, the process of issuing a callsign was akin to the NFA process. You took the test, it was put in a manilla envelope and sent to the FCC, and in 2-3 months you got a FAIL notice or a piece of paper with your callsign on it (my first was WN5AU_). It's great to see how fast you can get a call and on the air these days!

Good work!

I've seen and heard all Chad has to offer. It's kinda cute ;).

After much consideration I just pulled the trigger and ordered an Icom ID-51a Plus. Nearly all the HTs were within my price range, but the Icom was the best balance of needed features, reputation, quality and price. I'd rather have a mobile unit but a handheld is what I need right now.

I think you'll be happy with your choice. It looks like it's a 3rd generation DStar radio, which will open up the digital realm to you as well as incorporating GPS functionality and a few other things.

Starting with an HT and then getting a mobile unit for your car, and eventually a home (HF) unit is a natural progression.

If you find that you want to operate in your car, you should at least consider an external antenna. While the car will act as a Faraday cage to the "rubber duck" antenna, you'll be surprised at get 5 watts and s $20 magnetic antenna can do.

I'm considering the IC-7100 as a mobile, base and camp radio. Maybe I'm missing something here but it seems like it can do it all. Use velcro, quick connectors for power and attach the permanent vehicle antenna and its good. When using at camp I'll keep it in a pelican case or at home use it as intended.

On the power connectors, PowerPole is the only way to go. Red right as you're looking at the connector.

Oh, and congrats.

Every review of that radio says it is AWESOME. Great choice.

Congrats on getting your ticket! Welcome to the club!

Now you'll have to figure out how/where to mount both holster AND rig in the car!

Congratulations & it sounds like you'll be progressing nicely with those radio choices.
