So far I've shot a Savage 110 Precision and a Remington 5R from 400- 1200 yards using 308- 175 GN Federal Sierra Matchking ammo both quite successfully. I've determined that I do not want either of those rifles based on different things.
The Savage bolt action was not to my liking and the Remington wouldn't stay on target after firing making seeing the hits virtually impossible to see without a spotter. The Rem did not have a muzzle brake.
Those are my 2 experiences with Long Range Precision rifles. There is a lot to choose from out there and some feedback from experienced folks would be greatly appreciated. I am not interested in taking out a 2nd mortgage on the house to buy a rifle either...

Muzzle brake on the 700…..it’s only a .308. so shouldn’t be jumping around that much anyway.

Tikka CTR with the fastest twist possible.

Muzzle brake on any rifle takes out about 1/3 of the recoil force.

I'd skip anything Remington personally, Bergaras are great for starter/low round count, but not the most reliable, accurate though.

I hate Savage. Have owned 3, had 1 bad one and their customer service basically said to go pound sand. Never again.

buy a cheap rifle and you WILL buy another if you want to continue

I'm a huge Tikka fan and think most people are fine with a Tikka as their first/last gun. The CTR is what I recommend to friends.

I'd recommend a 20" .308 for inside of 1000 most of the time.

24" 6.5CM if going past 1k

check these out:

Appreciate the input. As I mentioned before there are a LOT of options out there. Decisions decisions...

Are you looking to compete in PRS matches? Or are you just looking for a reliable occasional LR plinker? Are you married to .308, or would you consider another caliber?

Those are good questions. I will probably do a little of both. Some match time as well as friendly competition with the boys. Yes I am going to stick with the .308 due to availability of ammo and that's what the guys I shoot with use.

Long range, accurate, .308, some competition use - I'd probably just buy a Tikka T3x TAC A1 and be done with it. Or, if there's another chassis you really like, the CTR like noted above and drop into your chassis of choice. I wish they made the 24" SS barrel in .308, but I don't think they do.

How much will you spend on it? What is the intended use? PRS, Plinking from prone, something else? These are the biggest deciding factors IMO. Honestly before I spent any $ on a remington action I would buy an Impact 737r action and build off of it assuming you're goin with something that is SA.

Recently I had the opportunity to have two shooters at my range with brand new, never shot rifles in .308. A Tikka T3 and a Bergara B14. Both shooting the same ammo (175 grain LC Match). The Tikka (budget Sako) action was far above the Bergara in smoothness and machining and shot tighter groups (200 yards) than the Bergara. Both shooters shot each others rifles during the session as well. They are looking forward to our next belly shooting match (both are very competitive) but sadly my single shot Savage 12 in .308 will beat them both. :D
