January 2024 storm(s)

Wind and rain with power glitches. I had to turn off my power filter for my A/V system. Too many turn ons and turn offs. Have my big tv and network on UPS. They have been getting a switching work out. THe big squal line will be thru here within the hour.

Tornado cut through near Claremont and Catawba, apparently went across 40, word is one death.

Very rainy in Durham, with a lot of gusty wind.
Good friend lives right in the path. 1/2 mile away at the Surtape plant had several overturned 53 ft trailers.

Mostly rain. Pretty steady since I got up at 5 am. We currently have a flood watch and 4 active flood warnings

Dang! We had some heavyish rain here in Ashevile, but no winds that I knew of & nothing bad happened in my neighborhood so far.

My area of Benson is dark last 30-45 min.
Gonna wait a out HR before firing up gen.
We on South River power...
Stay safe people and don't take chances till this passes!

Energy United is showing 13 counties with outages, 1728 customers/homes at this moment without power

Im thankful I have power. A friend about ten minutes away does not have power

We had a vet apt @2pm. We left @1:30. This has to be one of the bigger rain events i've experience, and i've been through several hurricanes.

Major ponding of water on streets, and of course idiots driving too fast for conditions.

My unofficial rain gauge says 3.5". I'm sure there was more, a lot of it was horizontal. Located in E Charlotte

So the ground is saturated and the wind is supposed to pick up tonight.

I hope we don't lose power.

Power out here starting about 1/2 hour ago. At the parents house, running on generator. Have a battery that I can put on the trailer for heat, just a question of do I do that in the dark or wait till the morning.

No power here, south of Kinston. Tree fell on power lines. Should be another hour or so before it's fixed. Ate "lights out stew" with a nice lantern lighting the kitchen. Kids playing board games by candlelight. Hoping this gets a quick fix so I don't have to fire up the generator

Wind, lots of wind. Tornado warnings, flood watches, wind advisories. 2 power outages so far, and the NOAA radio screeching at us all day. Can't wait to see what the yard will look like in the morning.
Be safe, y'all.

While watching/listening to Ryan Hall (thanks @kcult for the reminder) he said this is the first of 3 events we'll see in the next 7 - 10 days.

Stay aware and restock your supplies soon.

The tornado warning for Granville expired just before getting over to us (we're close to the Granville/Vance county line). Had a flicker and some heavy rain/wind around 1815. Calmed down a bit, but can hear some heavier rain again now.

I know we were fortunate compared to many. Hope folks are well and safe.

The drain in front of the Batcave clogged with some over flowing mulch from the planter and water backed up into our basement. Note to self: Ditch the leaf screen. Been runnin the W/D vac for a coupla hours but got on top of it. Got the industrial strength dehumidifier we bought when we moved here "earning it's Alpo" and fans going.
..My neighbor across the street didn't fare so well.. But at least his house, like ours, is on high ground. That's gonna be a pain and those are the power lines just above the water to the left. Hopefully no chunky debris takes those out. The neighbors are on standby if they need anything.
But luckily no tornados and we have options. Hope everybody else is GTG. šŸ¤

It put down the rain today. The creeks are as high as Iā€™ve seen along some of the roads Iā€™ve driven today.

Some decent wind gusts in Wilmington and variable rainfall. I was at Home Depot that ia less than a mile from my house earlier today and the power flickered off and then came right back on but other than that pretty uneventful here.

Rains was terrible earlier in the day in stokes county. Down in the bottoms behind the house where my range is set up looked like a big pond with a river running through it. With some pretty strong winds. I think it built up alot more after it moved past us. My dad in high point got hit pretty good. Here's a pic he sent me of his and his neighbor's backyardsIMG_20240109_181118.jpg

There is a steady blow with substantial rain now. Itā€™s sounds pretty wicked outside like a mini hurricane.

You'll get yers in ILM when all this crap washes down the Cape Fear.. First substantial rain inna while.
Gonna make travel on the water a skosh more "cautious" for a while. šŸ¤

Half way through an important meeting and the first emergency alert for tornado kicked off. Told them I was headed to the barn before it got worse. Still, doesnā€™t seem we got it too bad, like it lost energy as it got hereā€¦

Every creek I drive over coming home from work was at least a foot higher than usual and one ate the whole bottom half of the property by the bridge
Well that creek is usually less than a foot deep and 2 feet across.

To get to the top is about 6 feet and 15 feet across.

Thatā€™s a metric ass ton of water.

We had a radar-indicated tornado go past about 9:15; howling wind and sideways rain. Power flickered for 10 minutes but stayed on. My kids both lost power at their houses 7 and 10 min away.

No damage; daylight will tell...

We had bad winds and lost power from 7:30 to about 11:30. That's not too bad, except that the power cut off right as I was starting to fry up a sammich on the stove, which kinda ruint my sammich. About 11, I decided to head to bed and was just about asleep when the power came back on and a ton of lights and other forgotten things with it. And of course, I then had to go reset the days and times on both my thermostats, because we all know heating systems can't work if the day and time isn't set. Then I went to wash my hands and had no water, because my house is on a well system and the pressure tank now needs a reset because the power was out. So I had to get dressed, go out in the wet and cold and crawl under my house - in the dank, zombie-tarantula infested crawlspace - and reset the well tank pressure switch. Then I had to take a shower because I was dirty and covered in spider webs and zombie-tarantula dust. Now, it is after midnight and I am wide awake. Work is gonna be fun tomorrow.
