Color casing wears off. The hardness (the whole point of case hardening) doesn’t. I do believe in protecting the work that was just done when color casing, and damascus barrels for that matter. Color casing colors scratch easily. Wondering what people prefer between the choices of: gloss lacquer, satin lacquer, oil.
There are other choices, but lacquer for metal has no pigment, so anything that does is not an option because it mutes the vibrancy of the colors and contrasts. Keep in mind, any coating will darken the color, just like wood darkens when wet.
Lastly, bake on products are not good choices in this scenario because they don’t seem to come off except by media blasting.
