late model Ford F150 ten-speed transmission issues?

The tech working on my machine got a new maverick in 2022. He wanted to make the headlights led so he had to go in through the front fender.

When he did he found these

Ford also just announced a recall on his engine... can possibly catch fire while driving apparently. All of that aside, he says he loves his truck and uses the free tool regularly 😇

A lot of the complaints were about the transmission shifting a lot, which it will in certain modes. IIRC you can put it in "normal" or "sport" mode and it won't shift as much.

I highly respect what @Cluck Norris just posted.... that's great information to have.
 
Reflecting back on the price negotiations, the least transparent part of it all (to me anyway) was the negotiations on the extended warranty.

Just as it was when I was in the business twenty years ago for a short time, one manager appraises your trade for the new car sales manager working the deal, then you work out a “number” with the new car sales manager, only to then be sent to the F&I manager to work out any financing, extended warranties, service plans, etc..

You have to run the gauntlet twice basically. Since I’ve never bought extended warranties, the visit with the F&I manager has always been pretty painless in the past, because he basically does the title work, and the financing at a rate that has usually already been advertised by the manufacturer.

Thanks to the warranty links @Jeppo posted, I had an OTD number in mind, including a warranty of specific features, duration and mileage. I told them “here’s where I want to be OTD, with this warranty, with this financing (which I knew I qualified for)."

Because we all knew each other (except the F&I guy from Brooklyn), we all sat around a table, Sales Manager, sales guy, F&I guy, and me.

After some discussion about how I arrived at my numbers, the F&I guy said there was no way he could get to that warranty number, that his Ford warranty was 2-3x of what I wanted (and quoted), 8 year, 100K miles, $200 deductible, Premium Care warranty. All three dealers that Jeppo sent me the links to all quoted the exact same numbers for whatever variation of the Ford warranty anyone wanted.

And I hadn’t even test driven the new truck. So the detail shop had just finished prepping it since it was delivered from the factory only the day before, and I drove it. Didn’t like the “hunting and fishing” the ten speed trans was doing looking for the right gear in a parking lot. Didn’t like some other things as much as mine, even though it’s six years newer, most of this I knew except how it would drive. I thought when I ordered it, “How different could a 2023 F150 XLT 4x4 5.0 SuperCrew drive from the same truck just six years older. I guess I thought it would be better. It just wasn’t (to me anyway).

So, I went back in and told them I was getting cold feet at this point. And wasn’t planning on buying anything else either, just happier with “the devil I know, than the devil I don't”. At that point the price of the warranty came down about $1500, but was still $600 more than the on-line dealer quotes, but they cobbled together the whole package to get within $300-400 of where I wanted to be OTD. And I was not trying to beat them out of every nickel and dime. I really thought what I had proposed OTD would be pretty easy for them to achieve.

I should mention that even though they pretty much got to my price, they could only do that because they found an additional $1000 in factory incentives, and 0% financing. Which wasn’t on the Ford site that very morning, and had not been before. I guess the extra $1000 was what used to be referred to as "dealer cash" versus “customer cash” so the dealers have it to use at their discretion. But that’s just a WAG.

The F&I guy was of the opinion after talking to his GM (with one of the warranty quotes I had given him in hand) that these on-line dealer quotes must be gutting out certain features of the warranty, but after a cursory review later I don’t think they are. I could be wrong.

I’m happy that the online quotes better armed you for the negotiation. It’s pretty clear that those online warranty offers are for the exact same coverage sold by all dealers. On the ST forum, I haven’t seen a single complaint. On the contrary, I’ve seen comments like, “I bought the package online and it popped up on my FordPass account almost immediately”.

ETA: That three dealers sell the warranties online at SIGNIFICANT discounts tells me there’s still some profit remaining for them. 🤓 The only downside of buying the warranty online is you can’t fold it into a 0% loan.

While at cox a week or so ago trying to help my buddy get his brother a new corolla. The guy said this includes the cox advantage package. Basically extending the 2 years free service to 4 and some other goofy interior treatments blah blah blah.

On the breakdown it was $3495 which was exactly how much over what we were willing to give him for the car. I said just take that off and you got a deal.

His reply was we can't. I said thanks for your time and got up. Wait, let me see what i can do. He comes back and all of a sudden it's not $3495 anymore. It's $1999. I said that's still more than we are willing to give.

He said we're not making any profit at this price. I said then you shouldn't mind scrapping it completely and giving me the car at the number we discussed.

He said he wasn't allowed to do it and that was the end. These warranties are making and breaking sales nowadays. I guess since they are getting msrp, they gotta create a new way to give you a headache before you get a car.

Sorry about your experience fieldgrade. It's frustrating i know.
 
With my truck all cleaned up sitting in the driveway, and after I drove theirs, I am actually pretty happy with the outcome. My wife thought it was a big mistake to begin with.

There were discounts galore on a 2017, and only $2500 this go round, which was basically $2000 Ford cash, and $500 that I got them to discount the “dealer protection package on paint and interior” that added $500 to the MSRP. This protection package had not been applied to the vehicle since I ordered the vehicle, but they insisted they had to put it on the vehicle, dealer policy.

The other manufacturers and dealers have “double stickers” that are actually much worse. GM, Toyota. It’s yuge what they are trying to add to the MSRP.

Oh, and doc fee. I remember when they were $99 pre-printed on the sales order forms. I think it is $600-700 now. I don’t think DMV title work has gotten any more complex in lo these many years, that I know of. They might have to pay those title clerks in the back office 2-3x what they paid them 30 years ago, but I doubt 6-7x.

Next time you’re at the dealership, ask them to let you watch them “apply” that dealer protection package. 😂

The first new car I bought was a Mazda 626 in 1981. It had a double sticker for the same crap. I protested, and ended up paying it.

I’m still pissed, 42 years later.
 
I found the breakdown they gave us. He had a trade he wanted $4000 for and they granted that.

So they discounted the vehicle by $3495 and then added that back into the price as an “advantage”? I wonder how much it would have cost without any “cox”. 😂

I’m 6’3” 225.

Perhaps this is not territory you are familiar with.

My neighbor's 2017 F150 with console has all the paint rubbed off the side of the console, and he’s half a foot shorter than me, and no heavier.

But if you like them I can tell you were some new ones are.

I go look from time to time and usually end up driving away in my old 2004 F150 Stx With 228k miles on it. The devil I know vs the devil I don’t know and don’t want to pay to play with

I think it's designed that way.

In post #45 above there is a reference to a "ESP" which means extended service plan. These are similar in design and construction to an extended warranty but not exactly the same. Same but different. Best advice I could give someone is to be sure to read the fine print and know what you are buying.

I went through this with the H-D dealer's service writer a few months after I had purchased my Road King. The service writer really didn't know that my service plan covered road hazard on tires which the regular warranty did not. I came prepared with the ESP and had to show it to him. He then followed up with a phone call. He was quite surprised.

Good on all you guys who walk away from dealers who obfuscate; be sure to let them know nicely but firmly their ”system” cost them the sale. There is always another new vehicle down the road if you need one, and you might, as @fieldgrade did, find that you didn’t need one after all :).
 
I told him we'd find a dealer without the cox advantage. My buddy actually got put off so much, he chose to do what fieldgrade did and keep his old car for now.

Another thing. The factory powertrain warranty that comes with the new vehicle only includes internal lubricated parts. All the myriad electronics that control the engine and trans, according to the F&I manager, are often the failure mode, so once the bumper to bumper 3 year/36k mileage is up you are SOL if one of these systems or modules fails.

Rather than further convince me to get an extended warranty, it further spooked me from buying the vehicle at all.
 
I am 6’2 and one of the things I wanted was the the full console. With the pedals that move. And as far as the seat will go back. I don’t know how one feels crowded in these trucks. But everyone likes what they like. And no need in settling for any less. At the cost of a new truck.
 
I have the pedals that adjust, and my seat is all the way back. I also wear a gun on my belt if I leave the house, with an extra mag on my support side. I use pretty much all the available real estate.

When I bought a new Cadillac full-sized sedan in 2006, back in my salad days, I didn’t want a console then either. I paid extra to buy one without.
 
I think I understand how it affects you now. Not your knee area. But the hip area. Even with the fold down bench console you would leave it up. Don’t blame you keep the 6 speed. My 10 speed is doing good now. But they give no warnings.
 
The 6 speeds are nothing to write home about anyways. I'm dealing with the dreaded torque converter shudder right now in my Expedition at 86k miles. Going to throw two tubes of Lubegard in there to see if it just needs a fluid change. Otherwise, its $2k for a new converter.
 
I have a 17 f150 5.0. Love it. Was my work truck everyday for 5 years. Always had it serviced at 5k mile intervals by fleet services. New transmission at 141k. Got 149k on it now.

Hour meter is getting close to 7k hours.

6'3" 230lbs. Console or not doesn't bother me.

Currently have a 2023 f150 5.0 with 10 speed for work. Only gripe is the stupid driving assist beeping crap I turn off. Oh, and the throttle delay about 2.5 seconds when moving is annoying.

Edit to add, I like the interior of the 17 over the 23. The 23 just seems to be dumbed down and cheap.
