Late season fishing

Dang. Can't believe how big they have become!
 
Being fairly ignorant, well, very ignorant, is there a reason fish would be harder to catch this time of year?

I thought about hitting up a family pond before the arctic blast hits.

Nice cat, though.
 
Admittedly my line fishing knowledge is mostly salt water. I show up with a 8' pole, 20lb test line, a steel leader, and a chrome spoon for bait. :confused: So I need help from the local boys on how to catch a trout.
But I saw a couple of guys fishing yesterday from the boat ramp on the river. With all the rain, the water was racing downstream and high and muddy as hell. I don't know if they were bottom fishing, but aren't these conditions pretty much a waste of time tryin' to catch a fish?
I know I know...part of fishing fun is the d*****g-around part. Could've been their motivation.
