I can't explain what the deal is but I am really into these small fixed blade EDC knives. The only problem is many of them are rather expensive. Now I've got a ton of folding knives of every variety and I will continue to carry them. But for some reason I'm really drawn to collecting the little fixed blades.

I've got some Bark River and a Spartan, stuff like that. However, I am really digging the cheaper ones that are a little off the beaten path. Not saying I won't end up with a Giant Mouse or something nice.

This Berg Blades Bottle Butcher is interesting.

Anyone else a weirdo or is it just me?

I have a few that gets rotated in my edc kit. The shrade adder I've been carrying for a few years now and find myself using it more then my folders and bigger fixed blade. The little smith and Wesson karambit-esk knife I just picked up last month in the sale bin at tractor supply. I carry the shrade in horizontal belt sheath at 11 o'clock position for crossdraw. And I did the horizontal sheath for the little smith for left side or behind the back for right side. I find the small fixed blades to be very useful for daily task just like a good folder20240509_102806.jpg

Picked up this Roxon thing today along with the Knipex 4” pliers. The Roxin is pretty nifty.

Spyderco PM3 for scale.

I got a pair of 6" pliers like that knipex set you found and kept it in my pocket for like a year after I had been diagnosed with CIDP. My hand strength was trashed and I couldn't grab things like a card and remove it from my wallet or open a water bottle. Those pliers were the bomb.

Oh well. That one thing sent me down the rabbit hole of EDC things. Kind of expensive too.

I, didn't care for the factory sheath. But the knife I like. D2 steel.
I know there are folks that look askance at D2 steel but honestly I like it. For a suburbanite like me it cuts things and maintains an edge like it oughta.

D2 has always done what I've asked of it. One of my favorite knives is a Kershaw Outcast. It's kukri-ish. It cuts bigger than it ought to.

D2 sucks to sharpen. It's toothy. Hasn't changed the fact my favorite knife has a D2 blade.

Hmm maybe this should just be an EDC thread. I’m not sure we have a “small EDC kit bag” thread do we? Good one to post various small knives too.

One of the things I thought about with my small tool bag is that I want redundancy when it comes to a knife blade. So I’ve got a Leatherman in there as well. A Leatherman checks a lot of boxes. I hate that they are not gun friendly and have bought some knockoffs trying to fill the gap. But the quality just isn’t there.

This kit is based primarily on this video. I think this dude is in North Carolina but not sure where. Wonder if he’s a member here? If so then I hope he participates more because we could really use his input. He’s been doing it a minute.

That being said there are a few deviations from his kit. Okay that’s an understatement. I don’t have lock picking tools and I ain’t crazy about the price of the fancy Fix It Sticks. They are cool as they can be but I went with the Harbor Freight Icon kit. Which I think is hard to beat. What I did was grab another bit kit off Amazon and combining it with the HF kit to save some space.

I like the orange bit holders. It’s easier to see the tips on silver bits than it is the black ones. Black bits in black holders wasn’t a problem when I was a young lad but now I have spectacles and don’t see as well in low light.

If anyone wants to see my whole kit list I’ll post it but it’s a little bit of a work in progress

I did go with the bougie bag. Yeah I did like everybody else and ran a bunch of Maxpedition stuff. Then some Condor. Then no name Chinese Amazon stuff. Who wouldn’t want a Chinese bag made by Excellent Elite Spanker?

Kid you not. Bought a couple of their shotgun cards too.

That said, for some reason I turned away from that and wanted to buy American. The one I got came from Blue Ridge Overland. Made up in Virginia. It cost more because it is probably sown by some salt of the earth folks from the foothills. Or some hipster bearded artisan. Maybe both. Either way I am glad I am supporting a business on this side of the pond. Enough of this kit came from China as it was.

They also have one without any accessories and you can build your own out the way you want. Which appealed to me because modularity is important when I do something like this my purpose could change. What if this ends up being a bleed kit or something? So I got more inserts than I probably needed just in case.

I did get the Tuff Possum pouch but it hasn’t arrived yet. That’ll be the home for some of this loose stuff. Yeah it looks tied down okay but if gets knocked around while open that stuff is going on the floor. Plus I have other junk that’ll end up in there. Like an eyeglass repair kit etc.

A lot has been said about EDC handkerchiefs. Well I carry one sometimes. Keep some little ones on the truck as well. At a minimum I keep some microfiber towels.

Some people laugh about dudes who carry them. Granted, the latest trend are these bespoke hanks that are fancy. I ordered a couple because all mine are just plain white. Might be nice to have some that look nifty.

My dad always carried a hank. So did his dad. This ain’t a new fad. When you are workin on something a hank can be very useful. If you are taking something apart with tiny screws, a folded hank gives you a place to put them where they won’t roll away.

Handing one to a weeping lady is gallant and debonair, even if a lot of women these days are the furthest thing from traditional and not worthy recipients of chivalry.

That’s all well and fine but to me a good old Have a Hank is the original. Once in a while I’ll grab one at an old country gas station.

I like this one.
