The North Carolina High School Athletic Association could soon be eliminated and a new association formed by the legislators. It’s a non profit which not long ago was run by the university system at Chapel Hill.

But a couple legislators began looking into their response to covid and finances. The non profit has amassed 41 million in assets which is almost all cash. They have not been helping the schools with money they take from them. If all goes as planned this will be the last year they operate. Apparently they are tops in the nation in profits.

Que Tucker who heads the association stated in an article its because she is a woman and black. No Que Tucker its because you carried on the tradition of your former bosses during a time of need and followed Gov Cooper’s guidance of no fans, reduced games, limits on attendance, and outright disrespect for anything not football or basketball. Tucker is a hardline by the book operator which I liked but this time the schools were not on board with her decisions.

They sound like a HS version of the NCAA. That is a lot of money for an organization with no oversite that produces very little.
Yeah. That’s a non profit with a huge wad of cash. I’ve had correspondence with them. They’re not very receptive to suggestions. Usually they have some standard form response or no email back. Up until 2010 the university ran high school sports and financial matters. Back a decade ago the second in command wanted a retirement plan. He secretly had Orange County (I think that’s the county) list him as an employee to attach him to a state retirement plan. That’s forbidden by statutes. The SBI did an investigation but would not file charges calling it a honest mistake. Yeah, right. So the association started hitting schools with fees for playoffs, an extra game called an endowment game option which half the gate went to the association. Playoffs get $2 added to each ticket until the championship game with all proceeds to the association. Instant retirement plans added. Many of the less revenue generating sports didn’t have playoffs because they couldn’t suck off the gate sales.

I don’t attend games anymore or write about them. Football and basketball coaches have corrupted the sports. Mobile (my term) kids are jumping from school to school to attempt to become stars. Not hard to get from one subsidized housing to another in a different school.

outright disrespect for anything not football or basketball.
In other words, she only cared about sports dominated by those who looked like her?
High schools need more bowling teams. After all, there are full scholarships for bowling too. How about martial arts teams too? College scholarsips available for that as well.

Couldn't agree with you more @BlackGun. I to have had conversations with NCHSAA. I called a few times, no return call? The next call I made, I left a message and told em I would be in Chapel Hill the next week to discuss a matter, face to face at their office as my daughter was attending UNC at the time. I had a return call before the end of the day!

One of the things that might happen is not allowing the private parochial schools back into the association and making them compete in the private school association. Charlotte Catholic, Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh, Bishop McGinnis, and there might be one more. Lots of hate for those school because they win a ton of championships even with their own stricter rules for athletes. I like those schools character and discipline at games. Not a fan of bumping them out. Its just hate on the white kids because they win without flashy selfish students.

Chatham County was the one.

In girls Volleyball it is pretty well known Gibbons recruits kids. Parents also send their kids there on ‘scholarship’ if their girls are members of the local big v-ball club that is connected to Gibbons. Gibbons Principal for years was the founder of the club and the coaches are all high level coaches at the club. Our team lost to them in the HS playoffs last year. They were better and better coached. But it is a rigged game. Closest thing I’ve seen to the corruption that is AAU basketball. But that’s a entirely different level of money and crooks.

I don’t know the Cardinal Gibbons background other than they are outstanding at all sports. Mainly what I refer to as Olympic sports. I can tell you that none of that goes on in Charlotte Catholic although they have been accused of it. Any student who transfers into Catholic is banned from sports for 365 days.

All their athletes come from the middle school and when they get off the bus they look like band members but put a licking on big Charlotte schools. They even won the 4A basketball title a few years ago with all the swapping public schools do with kids. Bishop McGinnus girls basketball couldn’t be beat for almost a decade. That was a well coached school with a power AAU program.

The girls volleyball junior olympic programs in Cary and Raleigh area routinely beat my daughters teams. The clubs and sports complexes were well funded. We have nothing like that in the western region. Once West Hendersonville was a powerhouse with a summer vball program but when the winningest coach in NC HS history left it went down hill.

NC Bill HB91 passed and Roy Cooper signed it. It was revised many times to get Cooper to sign. It creates oversight by the board of education for a non profit to run high school sports. I expect that giant bank account will shrink. I am hopeful the looting of schools gates revenue will change.

Back during the riots Que Tucker and her minions changed from average daily attendance numbers determining the division each school played in for championships to a formula to include formulas which gave higher minority demographics the ability to play in an easier division. How? By taking school performance and other factors into the formula.

The bottom line for me was two NC legislators challenged the system and never let up. Maybe change is coming and future high school kids and parents don’t get hosed for money and fundraisers.

They need a full audit of the books, something is not right.

I’ve been told they set up nice retirement systems for themselves many years ago. There are very few employees. Like most non profits the people at the top make rules and determine their salary. Exactly like Congress.
