Lion kills person at NC sanctuary

That is terrible. My daughter went to camp at the Carolina Tiger Rescue and plans to go again this summer so this hits close to home.

Wow! 22yo intern from Indiana killed while cleaning the cage when the lion somehow escaped the locked holding area.

Except that they're zoo trained and can't be released or they'll starve.

The ones in this place were placed here because their previous locations were worse.

Yep, I know. It's the previous morons that should have left them in the wild to begin with. I just hate seeing wild animals in captivity. I know it's the best chance for some of them but I just hate that it is necessary.

'one of the lions somehow left a locked space". Had a key, picked the lock, bribed the guard? BS....Humans involved in his getting out.
Somebody made a mistake and this young lady lost her life.
Perhaps a second lock and chain to prevent the animal from entering the area.
Or maybe, and I’m no lion expert,
But maybe let’s not let the interns with 2 weeks experience handle the dangerous monsters that kill things with their face?

I'm convinced that some attorneys have begun discussing these very things already today.

Years ago I visited the Knoxville Zoo which is loaded with big cats. It was feeding time and I called one of the keepers aside and asked her if the cats ever escaped and was surprised to hear it was not that uncommon. The lady keeper said the animals were not a problem to get back to their cages but crowd control was critical. Yelling, screaming and fleeing visitors excite the cats killer instincts and therein lies the problem. It would not surprise me that the deceased lady in Burlington sacrificed her life for others. Either way bless that poor lady's soul.

There needs to be a LOTO (lock out tag out ) System to these cages.. . Everybody that could be affected by hazardous energy needs to hang a lock to protect themselves... From others.
There is, now weather or not it was followed is the question. I have been in a cage with a hand raised big cat and that was intense. You couldn't turn your back to it at all, and as long as you followed that rule you were ok.

Gosh what a horrible way to go. I just hope it started by crushing her skull or neck and not the soft nuggety center. Being disemboweled while living would be terrible.

WOW this is the picture literally on channel 9 news of them closing their gates into the facility I assume. No freaking way I would live near that place.

My wife can't understand why I carry at Tiger World even though there are gun buster signs. Sorry, I want a chance at least...
Peter Capstick (famous big game hunter, PH, and author ) said (more or less) he would not go to a zoo unless he was armed.

If I was locked in a cage, I'd try to kill any of my captors that I could get a hold of. Sorry that the young lady died, but you can't blame the animal.

Maybe not. Maybe her parents will take the approach that she loved the place, loved the animals, and suing an animal rescue place out of existence would not be the legacy their daughter would want.

Maybe not the parents but I would bet the insurance lawyers or osha are atleast discussing it.

We have turn to a society that refuses to except responsibility for their actions or inactions. Somebody did not do their job and should be help accountable, that person should be charged with man slaughter.

Yeah, that’s up there with, “they were playing in the room when the gun went off”. The cage wasn’t locked.

They’re cats. Just big ones. They get funny and possessive about people cleaning their area. Anyone with a cat would know this.

Good points and some that I had not given any thought to...….thanks for providing another perspective on this tragedy.

Big cats are apex predators. In a zoo or out doesn't change that fact. That cat did what big cats do. Saw this clip on youtube of people walking amongst cheetahs as an animal park, running to get into their cars when they were chased:

People become very complacent, and it is the cause of more deaths in the workplace than anything else. And don’t forget that at zoos it’s not only big cats that you have to worry about. My mom and sister were on a field trip at the Jacksonville Zoo when a chimpanzee got loose and started attacking people. They all had to run and hide in the giraffe house while it was pounding on the doors until it was tranquillized.

I have an old friend that lives up near the Center. According to him they've had some containment issues in the past. None that have resulted in death though.....

Yeah, if I recall the park explicitly tells people to stay in the damn car. And these idiots get their child out to walk among animals that have no issue eating humans.

I don’t trust dogs I don’t know around my kids. I sure as hell am keeping my white ass in the car if driving among them in a their habitat, and I’m not getting the kids out or rolling down windows.

The problem with Western civilization is we’re so far down the road of sloven luxury that we’ve forgotten that the Earth is still very much wild and trying to kill you.

It's called Disneyland syndrome. If there is no sign saying it's dangerous, it must be ok.
