Seems challenging to carry one loaded in your car consistently the whole way?

It seems like firearm unloaded in hard case w loaded mags in same case in the “luggage compartment” is the way to go?

I always fly…

An AR pistol is not covered under SC’s CWP aka Concealed Weapon Permit statutes because of size. In Georgia they considered it okay under their WCL aka Weapons Carry License. Now since they went Constitutional Carry I am guessing it is still okay …

Thanks for posting this. I have to travel the gauntlet of I-95 to go see mom in SC, and had no idea.

How is anyone going to know what’s in your vehicle????
I think about what if I’m in an accident, or hit an animal, or truck breaks down. Have to be towed. Especially if my destination is a state that doesn’t allow me to conceal it where I’m in and out of the vehicle and hotel. Like SC. I did not know that about AR pistols in SC.

I probably overthink a few things. It’s a risk/reward thing.

For those curious like me

(5) "Concealable weapon" means a firearm having a length of less than twelve inches measured along its greatest dimension that may be carried openly on one's person or in a manner that is hidden from public view in normal wear of clothing except when needed for self defense, defense of others, and the protection of real or personal property.

Is it a porn 12 inches? or ruler 12 inches? There’s a pretty big difference from what I hear…

That’s a fair point, and one I guess I’ve never really considered. Mine is always in a bag in the back seat of my truck or the luggage compartment or my wife’s vehicle when traveling, so it’s really never been a concern to me. I suppose if you wanted to play it extra safe you could just not keep a mag inserted and you should be GTG.

Although sometimes, this is my setup. Wouldn’t be ideal if I had to try and get it into a tow truck or hotel, but would be nice to be able to grab and go if SHTF..

So, the clause that @amnesia posted notwithstanding, is it pretty clear then that concealing an AR pistol is verboten in SC?

Seems like it. Even my regular AR carry is at 18.75 inches with brace

SECTION 23-31-230. Carrying concealed weapons between automobile and accommodation.

Notwithstanding any provision of law, any person may carry a concealable weapon from an automobile or other motorized conveyance to a room or other accommodation he has rented and upon which an accommodations tax has been paid.

I saw this in that SC statute, but since an AR pistol is not considered concealable, then I guess it could only stay locked away in the vehicle. I drive a truck and could stow it behind the backseat of the truck, but I don’t personally like leaving guns in vehicles, and I don’t know how to legally carry it into a hotel for the night.

But the same could be said for long guns, so I’m still clear as mud on what a *legal* alternative would be.

Yes,

Alot of states have measurements of the OAL of a firearm or the Maximum barrel length, each states does what it thinks is best.

In a case? I've flown with rifles, ridden in cabs, and checked into hotels in several states, big ol rifle cases in hand, no one batted an eye that I noticed.

Not legal advice: If it was small I'd put it in a bag to be less conspicuous. 4th and 5th amendment exist.

Who makes that handguard?
It’s a Diamondhead VRS.

16-23-20. Unlawful Carrying of Handgun; Exceptions. It is unlawful for anyone to carry about the person any handgun, whether concealed or not, except as follows, unless otherwise specifically prohibited by law:

(a) secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver’s license, registration, or proof of insurance; If the person has been issued a concealed weapons permit pursuant to Article 4, Chapter 31, Title 23, then the person also may secure his weapon under a seat in a vehicle, or in any open or closed storage compartment within the vehicle’s passenger compartment;

The way I read this, as long as you've got a CWP that's honored, it doesn't matter whether the handgun is a concealed weapon or not. The rules for centerfire rifles/shotguns are different.
