Asking for a co-worker, he is looking for a recommendation and that's one are where I am not very fluent as I don't like the optics of twig like mags sticking out of AR magwells.

I have a Colt factory, perfect function. I also bought a Wilson 9mm barrel and a drop-in mag well that uses grubb screws to keep it in place. Again, perfect function. I use subgun steel magazines only. The Wilson groups better, but either one works 100%.
The Colt cost me $900. The home-built cost $650, but the Wilson barrel is a Nice piece.
Be prepared to clean it after each use. They are blowbacks, and they get nice and dirtyšŸ¤¬

Reliable and AR9 are not two words that belong in the same phrase.

I have yet to find one that would not slam fire.

I'd vote for the Extar from experience and I've heard good things about CMMG, so I'd consider one if I had the budget for it. (Personally I would build my own at this point with focus on the feed cone area.)

I have an Extar and I'm contemplating selling it because my wife doesn't like shooting it. (She has long arms being just about 6' tall and she doesn't like the short 6.5" barrel. The weight is great though and the felt recoil isn't bad at all.) Home and yard defense is one reason I chose the Extar. It has never had a problem feeding which can be an issue with 9mm AR platforms. I just have or want other firearms and being a "pistol" it isn't allowed in competitions as much, which is what I'm more into now.

The newer version of the Extar EP9 does have a nicer hand guard and a better buffer retainer. I think they raised the price though.

I tend to enjoy AR9's as fun gamer/range guns.
I'd trust my Glock over one for defense. Just my opinion.

I'd trust a JP PCC. Or a couple sub-gun based like Scorpion or some MP5's.

if you donā€™t like ā€œstickā€ mags , a solid option is the AR-V from PSA. This was a new ground up design built around the CZ pattern mag that is used in CZ and the PSA AK-V. These mags are curved and work well with 9mm PCCs. Another bonus is plenty of mag options at a good price
I do not have an AR V but a couple of my shooting friends do and they seem to work and feed all types of ammo really well

My scorpion Evo has been awesome, newer version addressed alot of issues. Mine eats everything I throw at it, just threw a timney trigger in it and it runs great. Just another option

I feel you on the size, it is tiny. An asset and liability.

It isnā€™t as bad with a suppressor, but I have to very careful when Iā€™m shooting with just the flash can because I like to get my hand out as far as I can.

Iā€™m thinking about getting one of the fake suppressor reversible things that is sold by a forum vendor just to push that danger zone out a bit.

ā€¦..as for reliability mine has been 100% perfect. Iā€™ve only ever tried ball and flat point but Iā€™d use it in a heart beat as a defensive tool.

My cheapo slapped together colt pattern mag block and PSA upper runs like a champ.

SBRā€™d with a Form 1 can, Itā€™s a hoot.

For me the Extar is okay with a hand stop of some type. I'd probably feel better with an 8 to 10.5" barrel. As for defense ammo, Hornady Critical Defense or Critical Duty should have no trouble feeding due to the bullet shape.

I'd prefer an aluminum receiver because I worry that the polymer could be affected by heat (vehicle during summer for extended times) or just break easier. S&W doesn't seem to worry with their release of the FPC and Response. Torture tests that I've seen also show the Extar to be durable.

I shot a PSA 9mm AR in various matches for 3 years - worked well . I did have an issue , sent the rifle back and PSA installed a new bolt ( I had an early production AR9 ) . I wouldnā€™t be afraid to buy that
I like PCCs in general , lately Iā€™ve been shooting my Ruger PC and a Kalashnikov KP9 (my daughters)

Sounds like a good reason not to own one lol

not trying to stir the pot here, but, i have 6 different ar9's. tens of thousands of rounds fired. never had a slam fire. millions of these rifles have been sold.
you would think that if they were defective that they would be recalled, and all sales halted. JMHO

A pistol is a much better option for "home" defense. I found this out after training with groups like Apex Defense & Central Texas Combatives Group. Now a short shouldered gun is great if you are shooting across the yard or dont care about what/ who is behind your intruder or dont need to have a free hand to grab/guide your kids, open doors, hold on to your dog, hold the phone while dialing 911, use a flash light that isn't pointing a gun at your teenager coming in at 2am etc.

Plus, with a CHP, an AR pistol can legally be concealed in a vehicle. šŸ˜‰

I have an early production JRC 9mm. It had some timing issues so I sent it back to the manufacturer and they replaced the bolt and did some work on the feed ramp. It has been flawless since.

I also have an Aero Precision EPC-9 that I put together during covid. It is a pretty sweet machine, no issues whatsoever.

I'd give up LRBHO for the ability to add a Taccom feedramp if the PCC had any feed issues. In defense or in competition, if you run the thing dry, you're making it harder on yourself or having a really bad day! However, I do like LRBHO just to fully mimic the functionality of an AR15. I'm just saying, I wouldn't be as concerned with that feature now as I was before. It's nice to have, but not necessary. Reliability is kinda necessary. heh
