Just when the gas prices are dropping ... the largest refinery in the SE (over 500,000 barrels per day) has been damaged by a major fire. This will show up in mainly gas prices in our area ... not a shortage.

Kinda funny that this always happens when gas prices are falling....

It was down almost 25 cents the past two weeks.

Refinery: 'Oh, time to make more $$$. Marketing, quick, what can be done?'

Marketing: 'How about a fire sale?'

I am not suggesting a tinfoil hat type reaction ... I’m saying just when we get a break shit crap happens. I do not believe that Exxon (it’s their facility) would cause a fire took out at least one fractional distillation tower setup that will cost millions to repair and loss of production for many weeks ... if it would have been storage tanks, which were damn near overflowing last week, maybe but a major part of the physical plant nope.

They have storage tanks now? Seriously I worked with a guy who used to live down in an area that had miles and miles of storage tanks(called it tank farms). He went back for a visit once and talked to a friend who still lived there. He asked what happened to the tanks cause they were all gone. Guess someone figured out it was easier to control the price if they didn't have so much stored up.

The gov reserves are stored in salt mines and I think some of them are in La.
Plus with hurricanes it would be a good idea to have the tank farms inland somewhat.

Any reason to raise gas prices is a good reason.

Oil Exec #1: "A gnat just farted over the desert in Africa!"

Oil Exec #2: "Raise gas prices by $0.50/g immediately! Issue a statement about the butterfly effect!"

Like last year when they had the pipeline shutdown. It wasn’t an issue for weeks until the public heard about it and stampeded. I almost couldn’t get gas and would have had to take a work truck home. At least I would have had that option.

Between me and my parents we’ve got a decent storage of about 30 gallons. Our plan is to get a storage tank and keep a few hundred.

Unless you are going to use those hundreds of gallons in a month or less That's a bad idea. I spent years in the gasoline industry. It begins to go stale not long after 20 days.

Do any of the fuel stabilizers work?
I'm more interested in my stored fuel for the lawn mower, weedeater, etc.

What does “going stale” mean in the gas world?

I never used fuel stabilizers, and would have gas in cans for up to three years. Used in yard equipment and a boat.

I never had any problems at all. I can’t say that the gas ran at peak efficiency, but I can say that the mower or snowblower would start on the first pull, and a tank would last all day in the boat.

It was from those experiences that I felt gas stabilizers were snake oil.

This was in the last 20 years, using the cheapest unleaded.

First one I remember where prices were jacked up because of something like this was when the Exxon Valdez crashed on the rocks in Alaska.
I had filled up that morning on my way out of town, on the way home that evening the same station had raised the price by 10¢. At the time the price of gas was about $1.00, so 10%. Why, because they can.

Non Ethanol stores somewhat better But up to about 6 months

The issue with 10% ethanol gas is phase separation As well as degradation

I personally use sta-bil 360 But can tell after 45 days or so it has still degraded

Staybil works. I've used gas in my saw that was 6 months old that I treated with Staybil when I bought it.

Sta-bil is what I have been using, wondered if there was something better and I use non-ethanol fuel also.
    Thanks for the input.

Back in the day when there was a shortage Clinton ordered the reserves be released to keep people from panicking. Maybe this is a result of that.

In your case, get a Prius (or a Subaru) and put a bunch of bumper stickers on it so that you’ll look like a Librul Dimmorhoid. :p

Just wait till the Oil companies buy the electric companies. Building more power plants and raising rates because of all the electric cars coming in the future.

Fortunately, there’s regulation in that industry.

Plus, electric cars (for the most part) are charged at night, when demand is lower.

Plus, since all the manufacturing jobs are gone, the US has less demand on the grid.

    Got there: $2.25

I keep about 40-50 gallons of non ethanol on hand all the time and rotate it through my 4 wheeler, side by side, lawn mowers and the Jeeps get the left overs if it goes beyond 6 months. I use the motorcycle racing gas tanks that dont have the screwed up valves on them. And they are treated with stabil right off the bat so they may go a little longer if needed. I also carry 2 5 gallon jerry cans on the JK Jeep now. I came about as close to running out of gas as I ever had going down to Key Largo, Florida 2 weeks ago. I wont do that again!

I keep E0 with Stabil for a year then rotate. I use it in my car with zero issues so it will go longer im sure.

Gas prices in Charlotte also jumped about 20 cents
