I have a GI M1 Carbine that I inherited. It seems to shoot just fine although I should probably replace the recoil spring. When I last disassembled it for deep cleaning and to look at the parts to see what I really had, I noticed that the barrel would rotate. It was barely hand tight. I looked all around the threads of the receiver dreading that I would find a crack. No visible crack was found. When I put it back together, it seems to operate as normal but I have not fired it since.

Is this normal for an M1 Carbine or do I have a serious problem on my hands? If it's a problem, how do I fix it? Do I need to shim the barrel? How tight should it be torqued?

first most certainly not safe! The locking lug keeps the bolt from going back but the barrel threads keep the barrel from going forward. Likely result of loose threads is battering them until they fail.
According to Jerry Kuhnhausen 30 caliber carbine shop manual page 121 torque is stated as final rotational barrel draw from a firm hand tight position1/16” minimum and 3/32” maximum when aligning the witness lines at the bottom of the barrel and receiver.
Note I have done this and it is virtually impossible to do without special tooling.

That is what I figured about safe to fire. 🤬 I don't have the 30 carbine shop manual and I am having trouble visualizing this procedure. Could you please elaborate a bit? @keepcalmandcarryon

Thanks!
