My inventory lacks a tactical semi-auto shotgun, and I haven't spent a dime on a new to me firearm in quite some time.
Looking at the Benelli M4 and the Mossberg 930 SPX at half the price.
Is one more reliable than the other?
My only criteria is no pistol grip, 12ga, 18.5", semi-auto, and as reliable as humanly possible.

If it is between those two - go with the M4
I would also encourage you to look at a Beretta 1301 as a potential option. One of the fastest , smoothest cycling semi autos I have ever used
I am a previous 930 owner - was fairly finicky on ammo and it had to be meticulously cleaned after every match

Thanks! Hadn't looked at those.

I've got a SPX, and have run it in a three gun a little bit . Its not ideal for that AT ALL, but it did run well. Capacity was the only issue. I like the non-pistol grip due to the safety location. The first SPX I had came with a canted front sight. Mossberg sent me another barrel in two weeks after receiving my old one. No muss, no fuss. I've also shot a M4 a lot in SBS form and as expected....runs like a top. Its just awful expensive for something to set behind the door. Ive handled a 1301, but never shot one. Also a nice option.

Marines can’t hardly break a Benelli … they started with the M1S90 over 2 decades ago and grew into the M4 … if it ain’t broke by them it is pretty much civilian proof.

My 930 spx only has maybe 200 shells through her but has been 100%. My old 930 jm pro I shot a lot more and was also 100%. I've held a beretta1301 and it's a nice light shotgun. I've thought about upgrading but I wouldn't shoot it very much... those 3 are in three different price categories. If money isn't an option, the m4 is the finest fighting shotgun, beretta is the lighter weight runner up and the spx is the da poors choice. All 3 probably would serve you well.

Benelli M2 tactical also fits your requirements to a tee. Might be worth considering. Much cheaper than an M4.
1100-1200$ish.

Imo, the choice between an SPX and an M4 seems quite extreme. But I think anybody that wasn’t payin would certainly pick the M4!

If money is no object or influence in your purchase, then by all means get the Benelli M4. However, if you want a great, reliable, and good shooting tactical shotgun look at the Benelli M2 or Beretta 1301. Both of those are solid guns and in my past experiences more reliable and less picky about ammo than the Mossberg.

Don't wanna spend any more than I need to, reliability is the main factor.

Love my Beretta 1301. I can’t even guess how many thousand rounds I’ve run through it.

I have to say, that of all the shotguns I have tried for 3gun, the 1301 was likely the funnest to shoot. Feels so light and shoots so soft for how light it feels.

Also love the way the VersaMax shoots. The VM Tactical is nice and maybe worth a look too. @Slacker has one and it performs well.

If you're looking at the 900 series Mossbergs, get the 940, not the 930.

Wow. So, they did away with the bolt release needing to be held down to load the magazine?

I shot a 930 for a couple of years in local 3 gun and is was extremely reliable, until it wasn't. Started having random light strikes and it would fail to pick up a shell (repeatedly) I was told (by someone I trust) that I needed a new, heavier hammer spring. I bough one and after getting to the point where I was ready to install it, I realized that I'd need three hands and was a great risk of shooting it across the room to never be seen again. I also realized that even if I got it right (eventually) I was going to have to probably do it all again in a year or two. I put it back together and sold it and bought a 1301 on recommendations from fellow 3 gun shooters. I had looked at the 940, but I couldn't confirm that that had done anything about the hammer spring. Also, the 940 and 930 have the lifter down and is has to be "pushed" out of the way by the shell when reloading. The 1301 Comp Pro (blue receiver) has it up and out of the way. Also, when you pick up a 930 or 940 and then a 1301 and hand cycle them, the clear winner is the 1301. It pains me to say that as a Hillbilly American, who loves to buy American. When I bought my 1301, the Savage Reneguage wasn't out yet. You may want to take a look at that one as well if you can find one in a store. I've been looking for months and have only see field guns. No tactical or 3 gun models. Can't really go wrong with the M4 except for the price and the fact that it takes @another $200 to get it up to "regular" capacity. Shoot a 1301 before you decide.

My impression from reading/watching high level scatter gat trainers that the Beretta 1301 is the reigning king of autoloading defensive shotguns.

FYI. My local shop had a used marine coated M4 a few weeks back. I asked my guy at the shop about it. He said he'd received it when it was new and had to hammer the trigger group in when he got it in. Gives a whole new meaning to "brand hammer new". It was priced at $2000 used/unfired. I was considering making an offer. My guy said owner would probably be firm on the price. It sold within a week. I'm still searching for a a Reneguage tactical or competition to hold in my hands and see how smooth it is.....
