Serious question though ...

For wheelguns without moon clips what do you prefer for reloads? Quick strips or speed loaders?

where is this reload taking place?

I like quick strips for carry because they lie flat in your pocket. that's the only thing good about them. If you're not CCing it, speed loaders all day.

@Catfish - critical clarifying point, thank you.

Range use / practice for competition use was the intended question. When I carry my J-Frame I do prefer the quick strips. With practice on the range, I'm leaning towards the speed loaders. Have read others prefer quick strips over loaders for general use so looking for others experiences.

Speed loader. I just.drop a couple in the pocket of my shoot me first vest, and I'm good to go.
Pics of this Shoot Me First vest?

I carry [2] of the 5 round quik strip reload strips for my .357.

i like the rothco brand they're a little pricey.
put on over a t-shirt and you look like you're going for a hike over a dress shirt out for a nice dinner.
but my wife's co-worker and friends say I dress like a cop.
long as.i can carry any gun I want and be comfortable I'll take it

That's why it's called a shoot me first vest Among the people who know but luckily everyone don't know.
You be surprised at the times the wife and I have been out for breakfast and people have asked if we're going hiking or fishing after breakfast.
When I tell no it's a shoot me first vest we get the funniest looks.
The people who know don't ask
My wife ask why I do it I smile and say just messing with the sheeple.

And my apologies to the op for the thread hijack

Speed strips are marginally faster than loose rounds from a dump pouch or a 2x2x2 pouch. They should be called slow strips.

I know guys like Chuck Haggard advocate using them for quick two-round reloads, but I like having a full gun. So, I’m usually carrying a speedloader or two.

The best speedloaders for carry are spring-assisted inline loaders (JetLoaders, Dades, SL Variants, Comp IIIs). They are only as bulky as a subcompact/compact pistol magazine, they can be used very quickly, they will insert rounds into dirty chambers, and the right accessories will keep them concealed and accessible in a consistent spot.

The next best are inline gravity loaders, like the Comp I and Comp II. Not as fast to use but much lower-profile. Gravity feed also cannot shove a round into a dirty chamber.

Anything with a twist release is the worst. Much faster than a strip, but they are fiddly to use, and the exposed release can be tripped by bumping into things throughout the day.

I only carry J-frames anymore, so I use JetLoaders.

If I am only pocket carrying a J frame, I usually don’t have a reload on me. That’s not very common. That’s how I carry when I am lounging around the house or dressed up to get to and from court.

95% of the time, I am carrying a 3” Model 60. If I’m carrying it in an IWB holster, then I usually have a JetLoader or two on the belt right in front of the holster. @chiefjason made custom pancake-style speedloader pouches that work very well. It all conceals well under a polo, a flannel button-up, a light vest, or under a light jacket.

If I’m fishing in waders, the 60 is in a chest pouch with a JetLoader.

I have also used ReloadWraps on occasion with the JetLoaders. Super convenient way to keep a speedloader in, but at the top of, a pocket. In heavy winter coats, where belt access is tricky, I’ll usually throw a J frame in a coat pocket and balance it out with a JetLoader or two in the other side.

Looks like my trout vest!

I have (1) speedloader for my (1) revolver because I wanted to try it out. I can load my revolver quickly with it, but not quickly enough to justify using said revolver in anything on the clock. If I were going to shoot a revolver for speed though, I'd consider a speedloader an absolute necessity. To me a revolver is a pleasant target handgun, to be appreciated slowly, carefully and more methodically, but if you can run one quickly, then more power to you.

(Inb4 Jerry Miculek references, as indeed that man is amazing with a revolver).

At one time I had (2) revolvers, one being an IWB concealed carry gun. While it was only five shots, I didn't bother with reloads because I didn't go anywhere I expected to need more than five shots with it. Is that an unwise decision? Probably. But meh. I didn't feel like investing resources or pocket space on extra capacity for a gun I couldn't reload especially quickly anyway. Thankfully I am now using an autoloader to carry many much more boolits.

Shot in IPSC matches 20 years ago with a guy that could absolutely blaze through some ammo with a 625 Smith. You would not believe the whining you'd hear from some people about squib loads, etc until they chrono'd some of his ammo and shut them down. Really a sight to see.

the best way to carry 5 extra rounds is loaded in another J-frame!

speedloaders are faster but strips conceal better
