Speed strips are marginally faster than loose rounds from a dump pouch or a 2x2x2 pouch. They should be called slow strips.
I know guys like Chuck Haggard advocate using them for quick two-round reloads, but I like having a full gun. So, I’m usually carrying a speedloader or two.
The best speedloaders for carry are spring-assisted inline loaders (JetLoaders, Dades, SL Variants, Comp IIIs). They are only as bulky as a subcompact/compact pistol magazine, they can be used very quickly, they will insert rounds into dirty chambers, and the right accessories will keep them concealed and accessible in a consistent spot.
The next best are inline gravity loaders, like the Comp I and Comp II. Not as fast to use but much lower-profile. Gravity feed also cannot shove a round into a dirty chamber.
Anything with a twist release is the worst. Much faster than a strip, but they are fiddly to use, and the exposed release can be tripped by bumping into things throughout the day.
I only carry J-frames anymore, so I use JetLoaders.
If I am
only pocket carrying a J frame, I usually don’t have a reload on me. That’s not very common. That’s how I carry when I am lounging around the house or dressed up to get to and from court.
95% of the time, I am carrying a 3” Model 60. If I’m carrying it in an IWB holster, then I usually have a JetLoader or two on the belt right in front of the holster.
@chiefjason made custom pancake-style speedloader pouches that work very well. It all conceals well under a polo, a flannel button-up, a light vest, or under a light jacket.
If I’m fishing in waders, the 60 is in a chest pouch with a JetLoader.
I have also used ReloadWraps on occasion with the JetLoaders. Super convenient way to keep a speedloader in, but at the top of, a pocket. In heavy winter coats, where belt access is tricky, I’ll usually throw a J frame in a coat pocket and balance it out with a JetLoader or two in the other side.
