I noticed this topic on the AR forum and wondered what the views were on the various non-metal AK mags, which are all new to me as I have been out of the loop for some time.

I realize there is a lot of variation with the metal mags but I long ago got pretty well opinionated on that matter and would like to know if there is anything greener on the non-milsurp side of the AK mag fence.

I’m metal all the way when it comes to AK magazines. Croatian, Bulgarian, Romanian, doesn’t matter, they’re all made of steel and indestructible. The only polymer that’s acceptable for AKs is Bakelite.

Metal is better in every way but weight.

There have been some attempts at decent poly mags. Bulgarians make the various color commercial mags with metal tabs and feed lip support, Magpul makes a metal reinforced mag.
And if you have more money than sense and want to impress people on Instagram you can buy Circle 10 mags from KVAR for prices that will make you want a shower and a police report afterwards.

I have the circle 10 Bulgy mags, tons of random steel mags, and a bunch of the pmags.

All of them work great. If I could go back, I'd spend the money I spent on the Circle 10s on pmags and surplus steel instead.(when I bought them I think they were $50ish each)

Thanks folks, that's the kind of thing I am looking to find out. I noticed the other day that some didn't have metal in the lock-in areas and that suddenly got me wondering about the whole concept in general.

I would like to find a single model/brand that I could feel comfortable enough with to eventually double up. A lot of it has to do with weight reduction, as I have recently gotten into AR's and stuff with AR mag compatibility and been forced to realize how much a difference there is.

Also "clankiness" reduction would be nice as well. None of this is worth it to me if the dang tabs snap or wont seat properly to cause feed issues.

I've heard these are decent but I have so many metal mags I've never bothered buying any.

These look interesting.

My preference is Russian plums, Bulgarian ((10)) polymers, Russian bakelites, and comboc steelies - in that order.

I don't really fuss with American consumer-grade stuff. It generally works, but nothing works as well as the milspec import mags specifically engineered and built for milspec import AKs. And IMHO Magpul PMAGs look fugly as hell in an AK.

So, normally Tapco gets a bad reputation for their stuff...but I have some Tapco AK mags that have been amazing...so, metal looks cooler and work great, but my cheapo-tapco are solid.

I’ve got a mixture of Russian and Norinco metal mags. I don’t shoot my AK enough to wear these out, so I haven’t even thought about trying something different.

I’ve bought a bunch of those in 30 and 45rds they’ve worked well for me even with the 45s
