Major Thunder Storms

Power is out at my house. ETA is 230a. Thankfully kids are still sound asleep but it looks like the storm is only 45% through the area right now.

Edit: aside from my phone being at 15%, all is good. No need to break out the generator at this point. Worst case, I hop in the car to charge but it’s my bed time anyway, so hopefully power will be back on by the time I wake up.

We had power out for more than a day a few weeks ago, and I was really happy to have some jump boxes that could recharge the phones.

Yeah, there's a good bit of purple in there... Hope everyone comes through it without trouble.

Anybody know why radar feeds get so much more “out of date” when a storm is rolling through?

What I mean by that is, normally I expect about a 10-15 minute lag between real time and what the radar shows, but when a storm is rolling though that seems to get stretched out.

Our 230a power restoration estimate turned into 6a. Thankfully it came back on by then but the house was up to 76F, bordering too uncomfortable to sleep, and my oldest was getting up every 30-40min since 1a. Needless to say I slept like crap. Thankfully it’s not a work day.

Sunday naps are a curmudgeon tradition. You should try it so you know for the future.

I use the Windy app. It seems to be fairly consistent but I imagine a slow down could be caused by more folks accessing whatever webpage than normal to watch the storm.

Kinda like how slow reloading sites got when they have/had cheap primers in stock. 🤷🏼‍♂️

We could see the lightning off in the distance at that time last night but that's all we got.

.

when you see lightning off-in-the-distance ("heat" lightning)
you might want to try if you can see a Sprite (not the drink).
sprites are ABOVE the clouds.

GIANT JELLYFISH SPRITE: On Aug. 14th, Stanislav Kaniansky of Latky, Slovakia, took one of the most detailed pictures ever of a sprite,
an exotic form of upward-directed lightning. For a fraction of a second it towered over the landscape like a massive jellyfish:

"The thunderstorm was about 320 km away, giving me a good view of the atmosphere just above the cloudtops," says Kaniansky. "I captured the sprite using a Sony A7III digital camera with a 3.2 second exposure (ISO 8000)."

From bushy head to tentacled-toe, the sprite stretched about 50 km, ten times taller than a normal bolt of lightning. Balls of light only a few hundred meters in diameter dot the jellyfish's waist and tentacles.

Only a few decades ago, such a photo might be considered outlandish and possibly even fake. Now, however, we know that sprites are real and that they can assume a variety of fantastic shapes. See for yourself.

This. Like pumping water through a single hose versus 10 hoses….

House shook from thunder and lightning took out our AC. Was our 1st night in a new to us house out side of Mt Pleasant. As far as we can tell that was the only damage, but we had several strikes with simultaneous thunder.

Someone is getting hammered right now with some pretty raucous thunder, off in the distance, but nothing here yet.

We got 2" of rain here in the northern foothills. In the mountains to our north in Virginia, they had up to 7".

All that runs downhill. Mt Airy and some other places had some flooding and power outages. Couple of schools were closed yesterday
