What am I doing wrong here?
I stick the patch on good as I can, run it through the bore...without poking it completely through...pull back..and inevitably the patch comes off. Most times mid-barrel and then I gotta fish it out.
I've seen guys run that thing back & forth half-dozen times and it never comes off.

I always thought that was the case. But seeing guys back & forth the damn things...I figured I'm stupid again.

Only time I run a patch both directions is in my black powder guns that don't have a (easily) removable breech plug. You just need to make sure that the patch is a tight enough fit.

A jag is designed to only hold the patch going one way. What you have seen guys use that go back AND forth is a "slotted tip". The slot holds the patch so it can be pushed or pulled. Different uses, different tools.....

I don't use them. Bronze brush, then an undersized bronze brush with a patch wrapped around it.
I bet you, like me, have a rather nice collection of unused and useless jags

I have all the slots.
No..what got me curious was seeing guys do the same thing with jags. I think they're using heavier cloth patches that don't let go of the jag so easily.

jags weren't meant to run a patch both ways, besides, why would you want to? pull all that dirty crap back through the barrel? may as well get a bore snake..

Jeez - never thought about that. I liked Boresnakes until I read your comment and thought about it. I'm just running the dirty old snake through my barrel. Yuck!

I don't jag off, but I do use my snake... :)

I used to use bronze brushes and slotted tips exclusively. Tried the jags, realized their limitations. Tried boresnakes and found them to be excellent for range cleaning and, later, general maintenance.

My ultimate goal is to get the gun clean. I shine a light down the bore and check my progress until that goal is achieved to my satisfaction. Jags, Slots, Snakes, Electronics are all just a means to that end.

And the snakes can be washed, y'know...
