@mostly22lately created a thread asking about metal detectors and I didn't want to keep hijacking his thread so, I am creating this one for us to post our metal detecting finds/tips, etc. I went to Braswell Park in Tarboro today for a little while. Found about 27 cents in clad along with some can slaw, nails, bottle caps, pull tabs, etc. I'm still relatively new. Trying to work out the VDI on the Equinox 900. Pennies have a wider range than the Equinox 800. Dialing in the nickles (23 to 24) and dimes (low 80s) slowly. @Slacker I noticed in a picture of your in the other thread that you screen cover has foreign words at the bottom (to tell mode, threshold, etc. Did order it like that? I ordered some in English for my son and my 800s. Just ordered one last night for my 900.

My nox 800 came with screen protectors in several languages. I didn't pay attention to the language. 😜

So the Nox 600 & 900 (and XTERRA) have the wide VDI range. The Nox 800 is a much smaller range. 40 is max.
After using both, I like the 800 numbering system best. KISS.

I’ve read Minelab is going to have a 35th Anniversary sale. Someone posted on the Manticore Facebook group that they bought a Manticore for $1,200 (usually $1,599. Haven’t read anything on other model prices yet.
 
Did some checking around and ordered a Manticore from Big Boy Toys out of Oklahoma. They included a tote bag for the Manticore, Lesch type digger and waist bag with the purchase of the Manticore.

It's one hell of a toy.
Have you seen the 2D imaging it does?
I don't think it does any better in highly mineralized soil than the rest of them, but it certainly is customizable to different environments. Please let us know how you like it after you get a few hours in the field. Hopefully you go back to some previously hit locations and fine new treasures.

I have not seen the 2D imaging it does. Being somewhat still a newbie I look forward to learning it. I have been watching a lot of Dig That Beep YouTube videos. I was going to buy a Manticore from John (try to support him since I enjoy his videos and he is in South Carolina) but he couldn't match the price at the time of purchase. What got me interested in the Manticore is that, on one of his videos, he was running a Manticore and a friend was running an Equinox 800 and the 800 was having a little trouble with a signal. The Manticore didn't. I'll give the Equinox 900 I just bought (used) to my son and sell his Equinox 800. I'll be watching a lot of YouTube videos on the Manticore to try to get to know it better. Dig That Beep, NY MD (New York Metal Detecting) and Sod Busters Metal Detecting are a few of my favorites.
 
Only had a little time yesterday. Didn’t find much. 13 cents and some junk. This was at the old Macclesfield school that is long gone. Also checked around the old Macclesfield jail that had been paved all around it now.

I was watching the recent Dig That Beep video on Youtube and someone asked him how does he locate places to detect. He mentioned using: https://historicaerials.com/viewer

Nice site. I checked out the aerial view of the old Macclesfield school from 1957 and 2020.
 
Not yet. I watched Dig That Beeps latest video and they were hitting coins the Nox didn’t pick up
 
Got out a few hours this morning before the ran came in. Went back to Macclesfield but a different area. I am officially on the board with my first silver (dent an all). 1905 Barber dime. It was ringing up 78-80.

Yes. The Minelab Equinox 700, 900 and Manticore are water proof up to 16 feet. They had some issues with water intrusion with the 600-800 being submerged.

Just about all of them are waterproof (search coil and shaft) if you don't get the control box wet. So you could, for example, search while wading in knee-deep water. Carefully.

Most good ones will work under water so long as you don't submerge the control unit up top. The coils are mostly waterproof, as are a lot of pinpointers.
 
@easternnc4me the rock tumbler makes coins shiny, but wipes out any value. I’d suggest a soft toothbrush and running water. They look better with a little patina too.

Well, if you’re going to spend them as pennies, or sell the silver for melt, it probably doesn’t matter. If however there is any numismatic value this type of cleaning is far too aggressive. Think of it like cleaning up Sgt York’s 1911 with 400 grit sandpaper.
 
Went to Kittrell after work and drove through Castalia. Anyone around that area this might be a good place to search if not posted.

Anyone ever hunt at the beach? I did a little a few years ago, got a lot of aluminum can tabs and a few coins, but still think it should be productive. Neeed to give my kids a pointer when they were little so they could dig while I kept moving. They’re too old for that now, missed opportunity.

I do every year at the Outer Banks on vacations. Small tent stakes, clad, trinket jewelry for the most part.
