What are your favorite finds? What gear are you using?

I just picked up an equinox 800 and have combed over the yard pretty heavy. Some old cans, a few chunks of iron, a 1inch bolt, and a tin roof section. Nothing exciting but it works. Have some sand gear arriving this week and a trip to the beach is in store for me soon.

Most of my favorite finds came 30+ years ago: civil war bullets, old buttons and tokens, a few silver rings, one gold class ring (returned to its owner, who had lost it at the beach a few weeks before), a 1906 watch fob. My most valuable was a platinum wedding band that weighed 14.5 grams, found at Carolina Beach about 5 years ago. Good luck at the beach - your success will depend greatly on beach conditions. Great posts and really cool to see. The platinum ring must have been a heart stopper there for a minute.

Keep 'em coming everybody.

The only 3 I had in my photo album:

May not look like much, another case of "the original property corner is probably long gone" but lo and behold, 2ft down below the curb. These take a lot of faith and commitment and wet shirts

Then these, which I've shared before. Buried right beside a property corner. Damn things were wearing my locator out, and I thought for sure I had found some undisclosed sewer manhole.

Not metal, but I find a lot in certain locations where I'm using my locator. There was a hole pile behind me in this photo. Walking through the area almost sounded like walking on ice with all the crunching. Also found the remains of a dog fighting arena not far from here.

I can tell you which beach NOT to coinshoot - Lake Erie! 🤪

We have a church camp up in NY I've frequented over the years. Built in '46, and the beach being integral since Day 1, you're thinking - "Ahhh... LOTSA silver coins & lost jewelry!"

Well... they MAY be down there... but so much CRAP has dissolved in Erie over the years, the whole BEACH reads as "ore." 😠 You can run the discriminator down to JUST silver... and you'll STILL find junk iron bits & pieces.

Tesoro DeLeon, for reference - purchased new 12 years ago.

Maybe my most unusual find: a well. In the tidewater area of Virginia the water table is so shallow that people can just drive a pipe down into the ground (with a perforated well point on the end), put a pump on the top, and pump out water to irrigate their lawns (it's not potable, though). A friend had bought a house with such a well, but the seller removed the pump before moving out. I found the pipe in an area overgrown with ivy; it took about two minutes. She also let me hunt the rest of the yard and I found a nice brass whistle, made in Germany, plus a couple of silver dimes if I remember correctly.

Next question...where are you hunting? What beaches are worth the visit?

Went to the Outer Banks this weekend for my wifes birthday. Didn't get the chance to metal detect. When we head back next near for vacation I plan on carrying the Equinox 800s and hope to find more than tent stakes. I like watching Gigmaster on Youtube.

Don't know how new your software is, but there has been a couple of updates since I had my sons and mine. I updated the software with the 5khz months ago with no problem. Update site:

My friend and I metal detected in the remnants of a western ghost town. I turned up a .44 Colt cartridge case, a loaded UMC 22 long (not long rifle) and a .40-72 case. We also found some pre 1900 coins.

Also, when I was at Camp Ripley MN in 1981 evaluating ARNG units for their AT I came across some civilians metal detecting on the site of the abandoned Fort Ripley. They had found uniform buttons and belt buckles in an old trash dump dating to the mid 19th century.

Haven’t found it online yet, might have to take it to a jeweler

Edit:
This is similar.

A lot of pull tabs of pop cans, some change and junk metal....fisher F75
Ive got an F75 as well that Ive been using evertime I go out detecting. I also have a minelab vanquish 540 that I've never used but plan on using it at the beach when I eventually go. Found a lot of civil war items over the years. Me and my dad go together, the coolest thing he has found was a civil war musket about 2 ft deep in a field. Was rusted real bad, some of the wood was still there and the brass butt plate. Buttons, old coins, bullets.

Yep. Most likely if it is ringing up a 13 it’s more than likely pull tab or beer cap. At least at the beach. Although nickels pull up around there too. I got two today.

That's why metal detecting is typically a hobby instead of a profession. Most would starve to death if they had to rely on income from their finds, I know I would. I don't aerate my yard, I just metal detect it. Old house burned here back in the early 1920's so there is a lot of trash to dig.

Ya'll have a weird definition of fun. I used a metal detector in my line of work for many years and dug up enough metal trash to fill a dumpster. Coolest thing I ever found was my own damned pocket knife. @yard mongrel you getting any grins from it?

See post #7.

I didn't want to embarass everybody with my oil filter collection.

Not always fun but this week the views are awesome.

Equinox 800. Just cause I thought the gold mode would be fun to play with down at the hunt club.
Found a few modern coins and the usual trash assortment. Closest to anything interesting so far has been this old Ford coin from the 30's.
Sad part of that is I found it on the surface while digging trash from under where an old porch used to be on an old abandoned house at the club.
Anyways, I love finding things. This gadget is fun to piddle with..

We’re at St. Augustine this week, but most places here are a no go as far as metal detecting is concerned 😟.

Horse shoes and cut nails. No longer have a detector.

My dad bought me a cheap orange radio shack detector back in 1976 or 77, might have gotten it for Christmas. After playing in the house for a few min I went outside and the first thing I found was a sterling silver spoon ring. Would have been a good financial decision to quit right then!

Back at Nags Head this week. ever since they replenished the beaches a few years ago about thenonly thing to find is modern stuff. So far I’ve found 3 pennies, a vape pen and can slaw. Anyone get an Equinox 900 yet?
