Mil surp picture thread

The 1895 was criticized for lack of knock down power, the 6mm high velocity bullet seemingly penetrating without doing much more than putting a .244 hole in the enemy. Sounds like the complaints now of the M855 round! The .30-40 Krag faced the same complaints in the Moro campaigns in the Philippines, so the complaints against the 6mm round were probably not factual. Severe barrel erosion probably contributed more to the 1895's demise.

Nice Lee-Navy!!
Thanks! I have another that's been sporterized, I'm looking to restore when I have time - and patience. Parts are hard to come-by and I'm on waiting lists at a few specialty places.

One problem with 'over penetration' of the fast, small 6mm Navy was that many of the engagements were at close range at smaller people/enemy. The Navy wanted the 6mm for its penetration against lightly armored boats, among other things, and the big/slow 45-70 wasn't doing it. That small/fast 6mm projectile may have worked against the Marines fighting small Moros.

The story is that back in the day, Turkey wanted/needed bayonets for the Garands we sent them, so they took old Mauser bayonets and modified them to fit the Garands. I got one to go on my Turkish return International Harvester:

Nice! I don't think the Turks ever threw anything away. They even reworked captured SMLEs to 8mm, something I wouldn't want to shoot!

I did not know that. And I also would not want to shoot that. Their 8mm ammo is HOT! Turk 8mm in an M48 Mauser is a shoulder buster.

I remember reading about them years ago on the old C&R email list. They were definitely an interesting hybrid.

Don't remember if I posted MP40 this from Ft Campbell summer of 95'. Couple of months after we got the M4A1s. No one would take it out of the arms room it because it didn't have a magazine so, I bought one.

I know there must be some things that suck about your job, but getting to play with all those cool toys isn't one of them.

Once I get settled in and get my stuff out of storage, I'll post up some pics of my Arisakas.

Me too! I just got lucky and this one came on a rack grade HRA. It also had a TE2/ME2 WRA barrel, a single slot gas plug and a complete BMB trigger group. The receiver is a 9/64 RRAD rebuild. It is an odd mix, but a helluva draw for a rack grade!

Two weeks ago I stumbled across this sporterized M38 Swedish Mauser. It's original barrel is still intact, less the front and rear sights. Appears the bolt handle has been slightly modded, it's got a near criminally light single stage trigger, a pretty nice composite stock, and a one piece Leupold scope base.
