Mini 14 Tactical Bubba

Much nicer. Even in that stock(i hate green guns), you guys should be proud of that work.
I am not a fan of this stock either, the green doesn’t bother me but I want a full wood stock because that’s the traditional look I like for the Mini 14.
Absolutely awesome.

With that factory folder gas block, I would personally find it almost mandatory to put it in one of the Samson side folders. Tad bit pricey, but I have one and they are worth it.

I've never liked od green, fde, tan whatever guns. I agree with you on the traditional wood. My buddy just sold an original folder (like the a team) wood with blue metal folder in box for 2 grand! Those things are pricey now!!! Either way yours looks great compared to what it was. I like what you've done to it.

I thought about getting a letter from Ruger to see if it was a factory folder, and maybe restoring it. But I just don’t think this one is worth it.
Either way I have worked out a trade for the gas block since its value is lost on me.

If nothing else, it's a fun learning experience and you'll get something useful out if it. Time we'll spent id say.

I picked up the crispy stock today. It’s in better shape than I expected.
It is crispy:

But it appears it’s mostly superficial and the wood is intact.

I did a test spot with stripper on one of the crispiest area and it is promising:

I also traded the gas block for a regular one and some mags:

Some progress, I hope to find time to work on it over the weekend.

Labor of love. It's really coming together though. Can't wait to see the finished product

I wouldn't put any stain on it at all. Several coats of Tru-Oil or BLO will darken it up, the variations in the wood will give it character.

Too late…

I would normally not be happy with the results. It’s not great, even by my unusually low standards. But considering what I started with, it’s OK I guess.

There’s one spot on the forend that is deeply burned and I cannot get rid of it without significantly altering the shape of the stock.

I will let it dry overnight and buff it tomorrow. I may have to touch up a couple of spots.
BLO after that…

Is that a dead bug in the internals?!

I just wanted to reply to this comment because I find it slightly insulting.

I mean, I know it’s a pretty low budget project but, come on, a bug in the internals?

This is the Bubba Tactical!

Of course there’s a bug in the internals:

I can’t believe you doubted the turdiness of this project. There are MANY bugs in the internals:

LMAO

On the plus side, there’s very little wear on the contact surfaces. I cleaned it all up and reassembled.

Now I am just going through applying multiple coats of BLO.

Finally got a chance to fire a couple of magazines. I didn’t have time to do any real accuracy check but here’s a pic of the first 10 rounds, off hand, standing at 25 yards. The first five are circled, I called the low shot in the other string.

And after a few more rounds:

Again, that was just pretty quick fire and not really putting much effort into it. I didn’t mess with the sights but windage is pretty much centered. Ammo was whatever was in the range box.

I am pretty happy. It ran well with no issues. It looks good (at least I think so), and it’s fun to shoot. I am going to see how much it will cost me to get it coated. I think it is worth it.
