I have spent FOUR HOURS on phone with the IRS. They sent me a tax bill back in July of this year for 2013 (I had not filed a return). They took all the 1099s they had and assumed this was salary(!), and sent me a bill for about a little under $100,000. I filed a return, told them that I was sure I owed them penalties and fees, and sent them a bill for the amount I would have owed in 2013. They tore the check off, cashed it, ignored the return(!) and sent me a bill for the entire original amount (arrived Christmas EVE!), plus more interest and fees, and gave me an intent to levy. lol.

It is really amazing dealing with some of these folks (some are kind hearted, and some are..... less so). Anyway, I got them to put the levy on hold and try to find my return. I told them I could send a copy to them if they needed it, but they INSISTED that this was not needed since a duplicate would "mess up their records." I told them "I would never want to do that," but I don't even think she got the sarcasm. Anyway, we have had a most interesting morning!

Carole used to flip out about this kind of stuff, but that is one good thing about her embracing the whole conspiracy view of the uniparty and the universal corruption of government. Her biggest concern now is "do we have any assets which are discoverable?" lol. I assured her the answer is "no." Aside from a couple of vehicles they could force us to sell, almost everything is domiciled outside the USA, physical commodities that they don't know the location, and in corporate structures that no little person like myself would fear them sleuthing out. I will probably owe them another $7-12K or so before this is all over. There is no tax on crypto related income in Malaysia, Portugal, Belarus, Hong Kong, or Singapore.....btw.

Five hours now I have been on hold. Another amusing story. The woman in collections told me "you never filed taxes in 2018, either." I told her "I didn't make anything." She said "well, we have some 1099s." I said ok, I will go ahead and file, but I won't owe anything, the amounts are so small. She said, "well, if you have children in your home you can get AFDC and maybe up to $3,000 or more." I said "thank you so much for your kindness, but I won't be applying for that. I think it is immoral for you to take that money from people who worked for it and give it to me, when I didn't work." ................. looooong silence. Then "would you like for me to get you to the division where you can order transcripts of your wages for 2018?" "yes ma'am"

That was 72 mins ago. :)

If you paper filed a return in July or later, it wouldn't be processed for at least six months in my experience this year. I filed an amendment for a client, sent it certified return receipt requested on March 23. I got the return receipt back at the end of July and it was stamped July 14. It took that long to open the mail and send the receipt back and way longer to process the amendment.

I got audited last year for my return in 2017 which was the last year you could claim mileage using a personal vehicle for work. Sent me a bill for around 10k stating I would have to submit a mileage log. I had claimed around 65k miles when actually my log showed closer to 70k. I sent them a copy of my log and after about 3-4 months got a letter stating they would not accept it because I had not proved I had driven my personal vehicle. I called them and amazingly didn't have to hold but about 10 minutes and got a lady on the line who reviewed my case while I waited.
She explained I had to prove that I drove my vehicle not one belonging to someone else. I told her to stop and think a minute. Would it be possible to walk over to my neighbor and say I'd like to borrow your car to drive about 70k miles this year for work? Whose vehicle did they think I drove? She never could see my point. We went around for about 30 minutes until it sounded like whose of first? Luckily I got my oil change records that showed mileage and after another 3-4 months, it was accepted and they canceled the bill, but it took them over 6 months to get something so simple fixed and they never could and the whole while I was racking up interest and penalties. They must take people that are too dumb to be a telemarketer and make them IRS auditors.

Perhaps they believe a family member drove all those miles.

I filed for 2019 on the extended deadline of July 15th. Mid October I called and was told that the processing center had closed due to Covid, had reopened with limited staff, that having taken three months when the website indicates it should take six weeks is nothing to be alarmed about, to not refile because that would only make it worse and take even longer, and that I would probably get my refund this year.

A week ago a notice was posted on the Irs.gov Where is My Refund page saying the page is undergoing maintenance and will be down until Jan 4th.

Pretty sure if I had sent a check it would have been processed the same week it was received.

Next time I file and am due a refund, I'm adding a $20 check and a credit for the same amount in the appropriate box.

A client of mine just got a notice for unpaid taxes for 2019. The balance due was paid by debit when the return was filed, about Oct 15. Confirmed bank debit. It's an unusual time.
