Another 3.3 million cars subject to recall. These Takata airbag recalls never seem to stop. Make sure your vehicles don't have any open recalls on them.

VW was done a couple months ago, the Jeep a couple weeks ago, next up is the truck in a week or two... The volume of vehicles affected is ridiculous

My Ranger passenger airbag was recalled in March. No parts yet.

I think the auto companies are prioritizing older vehicles as the issue with the airbags relates to chemical degradation of the propellant over time. So the oldest vehicles are at the greatest risk, and newer vehicles may have to wait a bit.

Makes sense. That said, mine is 9 years old.

If you check out the websites that are tracking the outstanding recalls (can't recall the site I saw a while back), there are a lot of older vehicles than yours that haven't had the repair yet. Plus your recall is only from March - some of these Takata recalls date a few years!

This is good to know. I am thinking of selling or trading after the first of the year.

Any links to what vehicles are affected?

And get this:
Approximately 34 million vehicles are currently under recall for approximately 46 million defective Takata air bags that can explode when the air bag deploys, causing serious injury or even death. Additional air bags are scheduled to be recalled by December 2019, bringing the total number of affected air bags to around 65-70 million.

I used to sell to Takata. I can't imagine how they can sustain the cost of this incredible mess. Sad!

So eventually the automakers have to eat it?

Chapter 11 filings stink. I lost $40K in unpaid invoices when Owens Corning filed many years ago over asbestos related claims. I went on to do another $100k in business with them after the filing, but those invoices that we're outstanding when they filed? His-toh-ree

I landed a contract to produce the cut leather parts for the BMW X5 steering wheels. They were delivered from Italy to Takata's warehouse in McAllen, TX and then shipped across the border to Takata's wheel factory in Mexico. The assembled steering wheels were then delivered JIT to BMW in Spartanburg. It was quite a business.

I hate those things. Sure, they save lives. But we shouldn't be forced to have them in our cars. They should be an option.

The original intent was to save the lives of people not wearing their seatbelt. That got taken care of when the states made it illegal not to wear a seatbelt, which shouldn't exist either actually, especially since motorcycles are legal.

Therefore, airbags should be an option, not a government mandated accessory to a consumer product.

Looks like I'm good on this round...

A couple of my cars have been in twice now for the bag replacement. Between the original notices, the reminders, the reminder reminders, etc. I'm pretty glazed over when I see the name Takata. The skeptic in me is thinking that the other airbag manufacturers are probably laying low, as there cant be THAT much difference in technology in these things. And now as all these devices age in place, what happens when they activate when they are 20+ years old ?

Seems Takata had a monopoly on the airbag business and the automakers get to clean up for doing business with one to get the lowest prices.
