Title says it all. My lock cylinder wont stay in position! I can crank it and as soon as I let pressure off the key it slides back into the off position and quits running. I can fiddle with it and kinda set it in place to make it stay running but just as soon as I cut the wheel to the left at all it dies

Same type of ignition switch in virtually all Fords. Located in the same place.

You should also be able to feel the key switch detents. You may have a bad key switch, ignition switch or both.

Take the steering wheel off and take the locking plate out. Under that should be the ignition key cylinder. It should be secured with a screw and once that's removed the whole lock cylinder should slide out. You should be able to use pliers to turn the tab that the key normally turns. See if that does the same thing.

If the ignition lock can be turned counterclockwise with the key inserted past the normal stop then then the tab at the bottom of the lock cylinder has broken off. This can happen if the key is forced. Happened to my daughter and the car was in running mode, she forced the key and broke the tab. I used two small dental picks to remove the tab from the slot. Trip to Autozone and I installed the new lock cylinder.

Here is how to remove the lock cylinder.

Note the tab just below the screwdriver in the video.

I bet that's what it is because the key turns freely in either direction no resistance

The lock cylinder and the ignition switch are two different items. Some confuse the two when searching Google / YouTube for a solution.
