Earlier this month I bought a CZ 22 off another member here. Literally the next day I had my local gunsmith chop the barrel to 16.5, threaded to 1/2*28, and told him to save me the remaining barrel section. I only have a 3 jaw chuck on my lathe and wouldn't personally consider threading a barrel without a 4 jaw. Anyhow, he had my barrel ready about 14 hours later. Attached are the pictures of the thread protector I made from the remaining barrel section. I dunno, I'm proud of it and thought I'd share. I bought my lathe last winter and this is the first time I've actually used it for anything firearm related. I also have absolutely zero professional training in operating a lathe.

Looks great. Did you cut the threads for the thread protector?

Looks like a dang good match to me! Did you have the barrel and thread protector coated at the same time?

I'd knurl it. Function over form.
Thatā€™d be too much work for me. Iā€™d just clamp Vice-Grips onto it and create a good tactile surface. šŸ˜‚

I love the matched look myself. Though you may want to get a small pipe strap wrench for when that bad boy gets stuck, lol. But if you donā€™t plan on putting a can on often it wonā€™t really be a problem. Bravo on the fit and finish. Super clean seam.

Can will be on it more than the cap, but also a big fan of copper anti seize personally.

Anyone who does not say it looks great can kiss your ass!

What would happen if you cut a slight inset into the protector for an o-ring to help hold it flush in place?

Not a terrible idea, but I lean more towards leaving it as is for now. If it causes an issue later where it's backing off I'll address it then.
