Navy grooming standards...

Maybe they can give them a choice if they want to wear pink uniforms next.

Heaven forbid he gets in a real fight.

He can be like the rest of the sailors and get a no-shave chit...

Why not just clean shaven faces and crew cuts across the board? Man, woman, etc. Same grooming standards.

I don't mind more relaxed standards. The reason the Navy regulated beards was because the wearer could not form a seal with firefighting and damage control gear, which I understand.

Although I have almost always have had a crew cut or shaved bald, when I was attached to the Marines I tried to get away with facial hair in the field.

He needs training on how to shave properly or use one of those Pink Venus razors.

images.png As a kid I always pictured a guy like this as a sailor. Navy included. Its just a seasoned salty sail thru hell storm kinda thing. Needless to say I think they should be able to have beards.

Since this isn't in the basement I'll try to keep it clean. The reason the early Navy guys wore beards was so that when it was their turn in the barrel it felt more like something else to the guys outside the barrel. Think early glory hole. Glad I was never in the Navy! (Well, I was in a department of the Navy - The MEN'S Department! :D )

Much ado about nothing...Navy's only real mission is to ferry Marine grunts around and as long as they do that well who cares what they look like doing it:D:D

Beards and mustaches use to be popular throughout military history. That changed during WWI and the use of chemical weapons. The reason they went to shaving standards at first isn’t because of looks, it was so you could get a seal on your gas mask. That’s why hitler had that chopped off mustache as he was unable to seal his mask in the trench and was about killed with that huge mustache. It’s why the US Army would only let you have a mustache not to exceed past the corners of your lips. I guess all the awesome deployed operators who grow manly beards need not worry that anymore. ;)

Little factoid I heard was that the Amish/Mennonite style of beard but no mustache was actually inspired by the military, or rather anti-military. The style in the German military was to have large garish mustaches. So the pacifist s grew large beards, but shaved their mustaches off to set themselves apart from the martial style. Kinda like hippies growing their hair long while the military was shaving heads.

Yep they associated beards with mustaches with warriors. I’ve heard the same.

The ladies hair was for white ladies. Black women complained about the hair style and that drove the change, their were compaints that black hair was harder to get into approval. I heard this on NPR. I
