A buddy of mine is going to get his NC CHP. He says he's taking his 18 year old son with him to get his. I told him that you have to be 21 in NC to get your CHP. He says the law has changed. I looked it up but can't find anywhere that says it has been changed to 18. I'm sure somebody on here knows. What's the real answer? Thanks.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I'll tell him again but I don't think he will believe me. I guess he will have to find out on his own.

He probably thinks that because where ever he's going for his class is accepting the 18y old - but when the 18y old goes to apply for his permit, it will be denied.

He can take the class. I took mine 3 years before I got my CHP, no problem. Certificate is supposed to be good for 5 years.

Certificate has no expiration date. Completely up to the sheriff if they want to accept one that is older. Most will not take it after one year.

I just looked on the Meck Co Sheriff's Office website and it says that you must be 21 for both a purchase permit and a CHP. It's in the FAQ's part of the gun permit section. Is that just a Meck Co thing or did the purchase permit recently change to 18 years old?

I don’t think anything has changed.

You can get a permit at 18, if the sheriff will issue it. The problem is you have to be 21 to buy a handgun from an FFL. Some sheriffs know that and refuse to issue them for whatever reason they come up with.

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit for MCSO to try that.

Please, will everyone STOP going to the sheriff's department website to try to figure out what's legal?

As I've written before, I got numerous pistol purchase permits in Davidson county before I was 21 when their website said you had to be 21 to get a permit.

Yes, for a CHP you have to be 21.

Look up the actual statutes if you want to know what the law says.

That's as close as you can get to the actual statutes without being the actual statutes, but it still isnt the law. That's a 4 year old summary of the laws written by the AG. That's important to note because that document doesnt get updated each year like the statutes do.

The statutes themselves are linked in my signature.

This a momentous occasion in history...well, at least my personal history. I had no clue (rather never cared to have a clue) wha “nit picking” likely referred to. Until now. When you spelled it out all backwards like, it hit me. And having two boys that had their run with lice over the years certainly helped as well.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my understanding of that old saying.

I feel like a new man...for a few minutes, then my sore back tells me to sit back down.
