Apologies if this is the incorrect place for this question.

New GF wants me to hunt with her. Never really hunted anything but hogs. I’m very accurate with my SCAR in .308, wondering if this is a good choice for deer/coyote or if I should consider a boltgun of some kind in one of the 20-30 cal hunting calibers. (.243, .270, 7mm, .300 M or UM)

Would I get odd looks showing up to hunt with a SCAR? It’s in full 16” config and I have a can for it. Currently with a 1-8 but I’d probably put something bigger on top if I had to push over 500 yards. Is that how far you generally take deer from? Would .308 be too much for coyotes?

Thanks in advance!

90% of places I've deer hunted in NC a shotgun was about all that was needed. There's very few places in NC where you will ever need a 500 yard shot on any type of game. 20 to 100 yards is gonna take care of most NC deer hunting.

Defiantly good with the .308 for deer. No magazine regulations for NC, not sure about other states. However, if it is a club, there maybe some club rule (most likely not) regarding magazine capacity and rifle type. I certainly wouldn’t look at you funny for breaking out a SCAR.

Brownells had Rem 700 308 for like $550 this week. Great all round cartridge and gun. Lots of after market accessories and part available. Probably more than any other bolt gun. Add a 8oz Timney Hit trigger and you got something that will shoot inside an inch at 100yds with good ammo.
