OK - my dumbell question of the day - is a NC Farm Plate worth it? Seems like a no brainer.

I can answer yes to all the questions on the Farmer Affidavit but will I still need to do an annual inspection? Sounds like taxes and insurance are much less so maybe this really is a no brainer.

Although tax & insurance on a 94 F150 is not much already

# 6 is the biggie. If you'll never use it for anything other than farm use, it's a no brainer. If you have a buddy that might borrow it because he wants a new grill that he needs to transport home, then there's a little bit of risk.

It’s worth it if you use weighted plates, especially higher weights because the tax per pound is less.

As Scott mentioned the weight plates is where its a big advantage.

It's over 20 years old, so just a safety inspection. I've heard that after 30 years, there are no more inspections.

It states in # 4, "Primary Purpose" Is for farm use, No where does it say you can't take the truck to buy a grill, drop the kids off at school, vacation.. etc

Safety inspection only until 30 years old. Then no inspection at all.

So the tag is about half price on the weight and you only need a safety inspection. Since your truck is over 20 years, anyways.

For the insurance, you can have a vehicle at the farm rate with out the farm tag.

Biggest thing they will bust you on is hauling for hire.

Do know it requires inspections typically and mine being diesel only gets a safety anyway but not sure about the 20 and 30 year exceptions but the 20 year only getting safety is typical for regular tags so makes sense but still worth asking. It use to have a stipulation of distance from farm (thinking 150 miles) as well but never heard of anyone being harassed over that unless you had something else to get you pulled. Most state troopers i have asked about farm plates say they try to look the other way if possible unless they just have to get involved because of a wreck or obvious issue just because there are so many exceptions and gray areas when it comes to farm tags

I'm unaware of any difference that farm plates make in terms of inspections. The main benefit is the lower cost.

Thanks all. Was hoping I could avoid replacing the windshield so it will pass safety inspection due 5/31.

I'll try for the farm tag anyway - best case I save a few $$ to put towards more ammo.

I’ve been running a $3 plate like this from tractor supply for a few months. 93 f150 hardly leaves the property so I asked the ladies at the drivers license plate place their opinion and they recommended it. Said as long as I’m with 10 miles or so of the house it wouldn’t be a problem, just don’t cause a wreck. I could be way off base but the couple times I’ve got gas and had to go to the shop I’ve had no problems. I have hauled wood a few times as well.

They have been specifically been cracking down on those plates. Bc you arn't required to have insurance, that is strictly farm only. You can run up to get gas, but you turn into the drive thru for a burger and it stops being farm use and the they will ticket you.

Do they even care about the glass? Neighbor has a van with cracked windshield and somehow he's passing inspection. Maybe slick Charlie is doing it under the table.

Windshield is actually not part of the inspection. Fails under wipers if they catch on the damage.
The inspection is a ridiculous waste of time.
