NC Liquor shortage

In Grenada even the corner store had liquor on the shelf. There were some names I was familiar with and after doing the currency conversion, the price there was about the same as what they are here in the ABC stores.

I see it as a catch-22. It really has little to no effect on the price or availability of "run-of-the-mill" products, as they stay pretty much the same regardless of sales structure. The difference really only manifests with the high end allocateds.

The bad thing about state run stores is, unless you have a buddy that is an insider who tips you off to shipments and/or holds bottles in the back room for you, you will almost NEVER find a top tier allocated bottle on the shelf. But the good thing about state run stores is that if lightning ever strikes the outhouse and you DO find a unicorn (or win one in a store lottery) it is sold to you at MSRP.

By contrast, if you switch to "private" liquor stores, you will finally be able to find allocateds on the shelf on demand at a few select stores. But they will only be available because they will be marked up on average 500%-2000% over retail. To most folks, there is no practical difference between there being no bottles of Pappy on the shelf for $200 and there being plenty of bottles of Pappy on the shelf for $2500.

But most people just want a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Which will be 32$ and available. Or a little splurge for Blantons.
I go somewhere else: BT in the well.

There is never any upside to state-ran anything. Period full stop.

Yep, that was the gist of my post. For the folks content to drink ditch water, it doesn't really matter who runs the show. State run is only an advantage if you like the premium bottles and are either connected or lucky.

What is a liquor I can horde that costs the same as toilet paper?

Look for Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star on the bottom shelf. (Don't get the regular Ancient Age). AAA is just Blanton's that has been homogenized (not single barrel) and bottled. And it is only like $24 a half gallon. Or, if you see Very Old Barton, it is only like $14 a fifth, and is also very tasty.

Try Benchmark, made by Buffalo Trace distilleries - very good, ~$10/5th. its my drinkin everyday bourbon.

The only thing that I've seen hard to get has been Blanton's.Durham stores are well stocked as is Granville county stores ,Henderson store and Clarksville,VA. I did notice for a couple of weeks I couldn't find Bulliet bourbon but it's back in stock.

I haven’t had a bottle of Blantons in 15 months. Can’t find it anywhere

You know there hasn't been any real Pappy in 30 or 40yrs. Since then it's been Weller, Wild Turkey and now Buffalo Trace. Read Pappy Land book.

The current governor said at one time he didn't think the state needed to be in the retail liquor business. Then somebody with a broken nose asked him if he had ever been on fire.

Jeezy Creezy! I'm glad I don't drink much. I still have liquor in the cabinet from several years ago. My SIL is a bartender and says it will be just fine in a stable environment. Just that once it leaves the barrel, whiskeys don't continue to "age".

Don't you boys know some moonshiners?

One thing Cooper is right about. The state has no business being in the liquor business.

Trip to midwest didn’t yield a great deal of rare stuff but the private liquor stores didn’t have any empty shelves and all of them were very large stores.

Prices seemed high to me but I don’t visit spirit stores. I did call from Kansas couple weeks ago and the manager saved me a Eagle Rare that I had 24 hours to get someone to pick up. Same store down the road from me didn’t have much at all in bourbon when I went. Not really an area for high end bottles.

Notth Carolina has no reason to be in the liquor business. Probably cost more to administer it than revenue stream. My next door neighbor was on a local board. He says two weeks ago he bought Makers Mark for $18 less in California.

No deals to be had in KS. State liquor board front loads ALL the taxes, stores have to use their assigned distributor & there is a maximum discount from list price. In many cases, the allowable discount would put retailers in the red & if your competition in the next town over has a less expensive distributor, you have no opportunity to compete.

Glad I quit drinkin.......... Maybe me and Chicken Lady will make a fortune bartering wine😂

I was at North Myrtle Beach last week and I have never seen so many bottles of liquor on the shelf in a long time. Also, I guess I have been living under a rock. The Costco a Myrtle Beach has a liquor store attached to it. Picked up several bottles of their branded liquor to give it a try. It was priced right. Best deal in their was Woodford Reserve $34 a bottle.

SC has it figgered out. That's where I stock up when I go to see my Mom.

I think Va. does it right. At least the inventory is online. SC you can find stuff at or under retail, but not what everyone normally chases.

I was at the Asheville ABC store on Tunnel RD yesterday. Looked fully stocked. I picked up 4 bottles of Four Roses, but I can't find Jefferson's Ocean here or in SC.

On a side note....I was placing the recently acquired Cold Mountain brew in the beer fridge and saw that I still have one last quart of Popcorn Sutton's shine...it had been
converted to "Apple Pie"...it's got to be at least 12 years old!

If you're talking about that $100 a bottle Jefferson's Ocean, I see it all the time at the store I haunt.

If you want I should grab you a bottle, let me know. We can figure out the transfer later.

Thanks man, but I'm in no hurry. Just wanted to try a bottle due to the praises that it gets here.

BTW...where is ChesCo SC?

Chesterfield County.

I'm about an hour south of Matthews, NC and almost an hour north of Florence, SC.

Ah!...have a good friend that lives in Hartsville, but has a nice chunk of getaway acreage in Chesterfield, behind the motocross track.

He can probably find it in Hartsville as quickly as I can here.

And my wife (a nurse) has tended to several of those ClubMX clowns. Haha.

ABC warehouse operator tells lawmakers it can’t show up to answer their questions

"The warehouse is three weeks behind its delivery schedule, sources say ABC managers are telling them, and that includes holiday products, which are stored in a second, stocked warehouse in Raleigh. Further, the warehouse won’t release a particular product to any single store until all 400 or so stores can get it, too. Regardless of population or customer demand.

Cases of the popular and hard-to-get Buffalo Trace bourbon are stacked in the warehouse, say sources. But the product is not in stores. LB&B has blamed the problems on labor shortages, particularly truck drivers, and a new computer system."

Bought a bottle of Jefferson’s Presidential back in 2013 to share with my team for a well earned victory celebration. That was some smooth, fine stuff.

I honestly thought that said "soy sauces" and thought holy crap i know it's fermented but this ABC thing is beyond ridiculous
I miss being able to buy beer and liquor in every corner store and grocery market like i could do up in MI

I’m fortunate to live near the SC border. I was remarking to my wife how well stocked Frugal MacDougals, Southern Spirits, and the other liquor store across the street are despite heavy demand. I went to FMcD’s Friday before Halloween and had to park around the back where I thought it was hookers only. The place was so damn crowded I thought it must be BOGO free day. Still well stocked though.

I was always impressed by the liquor barn right across the NH line. Huge ass red barn looking thing. You could burn a couple of hours in there just wandering the aisles. First time up nawth I spent a fortune in there and had to lug the bottles around without breaking them the rest of the trip!

I'm afraid I'm just one of the unwashed masses though. I appreciate and can tell a finely crafted and aged bottle but after a certain price point, alcohol is alcohol to me. Because we all know, marketing and ad copy would never lie to me.

Especially the "clear" booze. Except maybe certain rums. I'll cut them some slack, especially if one were to acquire certain rums from ISOM.

Found some Jefferson's Ocean in Ware Shoals of all places...$71.99. Picked up a Jefferson's Reserve as well, to compare. It was half as much.

I was back in Michigan earlier this week for hunting. In MI, you can buy it right off the shelf.

Didn't seem like they had a shortage at all.

A review....did a side by side taste test with the Jefferson's Oceans VS the Jefferson's Reserve.
$72 VS $35 respectively.
The Ocean was slightly smoother, but with the price difference, it's not worth it.

Shelves have been a little thin in Fuquay
