Time to finally get a 22lr rifle. LGS has S&W, HK 416, Tipman, and Mossberg options. I’ve heard about the S&W and HK, others not so much. This is going to be a range toy. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

My S&W 15-22s are among my favorites. You can’t go wrong with the rifle or pistol (why not both?).

S&W has a great .22, I owned one for a few years. I ened up trading it for a CMMG Quebec (dedicated .22). It is top notch also. I recently bought my daughter the Tippmann M4 .22 and it is my favorite. The Tippmann cost more than the M&P but is worth it IMHO. The mossbergs are decent guns but can have feeding issues with some ammo. A buddy has one and I have shot it quite a bit. I owned an HK 416 .22 for less than 4 months. It ran okay with all the HV ammo I tried but hated anything standard velocity I tried shooting in it. I personally would stick with the S&W M&P, you can’t go wrong with them.

I think the consensus is that the S&W is the standard by which all others are judged. I've owned a couple and they were flawless. I ended up building a dedicated SBR'd one with the CMMG bolt and S&W mag adapter on a standard AR lower. It's just silly how much fun they are.

my buddy has the mossberg. i've shot with it. get one of the others.
the tippman looks to be higher quality for sure, but higher price and fewer options so far.

I have a few useless lowers, so I kind of want to get a ~9" cmmg barrel and bolt and go the dedicated route. But if i were to decide to buy one thing right now, it would probably be an m&p pistol.

You are set on a AR style rifle? I have a Ruger 10/22 in a fully tactitool TALO stock, with a simple red dot it's great fun shooting steel at 50 yards.

S&W is def the most popular option. If its just for a range toy, thats probably the way to go. If you want something a little more sturdy (metal parts vs plastic) then take a look at the tippmann. i have both - like both.

is the out of battery problem still a thing with the smith 22 ar?
That's been fixed, and, Appleseed now accepts these again as of August 1st.
Still, the Tippmann M4-22 is a better platform in several ways, most notably reliability.

OP, please LEARN FROM MY MI$TAKES!

Just about EVERY time CDNN (or any of the other online big boys) had a ”special” on “tactical” 22’s I took the hook (and line and sinker). HK, Sig, Mossberg, GSG, MP5 clones, SCAR clones, the more exotic the more my left brain took over. What I found out is THE ONEs THAT “RUN” YOU CAN’T FIND MAGS FOR!!!!!!! And, you guessed it; the ones I can (sorta) find mags for are PCs of cr*p, wall hangers at best :-/

It never occurred to me to wonder, “How easy is it gonna be for me to stock up on a dozen or so mags?”

THEN, a friend moving sold me my first S&W M&P15-22!!!!!!!! Nirvana! Runs flawlessly AND mags are readily available (for as little as $17 if you’re patient …!)

Our family now has 4 ... or 5 …!

Mine is the M&P15-22 pistol - PURE FUN (you should seriously consider this one first!)

Wifey‘s is the Muddy Girl Camo

Grandsons is the FDE with quad rail forend

Grandaughters is the Robin Egg blue (soon to have bipod mounted!)

Wait, ^that‘s^ four; my bad, #5 will be the Kryptek digital camo as soon as I get notified someone has it in stock online (it will go to grandson so I can get my FDE with quad rail back)

In case you haven’t figured it out yet; S&W M&P15-22 All The Way, For The Win!!!!!

Now, Tippmans are higher quality yes but, buying 5 tippmans ain’t in my budget, haha! (plus, I don’t know if I could find fifty Tippman mags as easy as I have been able to stock up on that many 15-22 mags (when I buy 2A, I buy with my gkids’ kids in mind! ;-)

Full disclosure: my buddy also sold me a Ruger 10/22 with a heavy bbl, MagPul stock and BADazz Leupold scope but, that sucka is so accurate it is a true Tool, not a range “toy,” haha! (BUT, mags ARE readily available and that ain’t no joke!)

The S&W was the first fully manufactured dedicated 22 long rifle AR . To me it's a hands down favorite.....

GEEEEEEZ! WHICH REMINDS ME! OP, ^that^ means you can drop in actual mil spec AR fire control groups!!!!!!!!!

This is HUGEEEEEE (especially if you ever suffer some of the triggers that came on many of those aforementioned “rimfire-clone-abortion” mistakes I prefaced with upthread.

Dont take MY word for it; ask my 11yoa granddaughter (or 15yo g’son or wifey) how they like the CMC 2.5 lb pull drop-in triggers I put in all four of our 15-22’s, flat bow of course, hee-hee!

Gosh man, TALK ABOUT FUNNNNNN!

(I clean ‘em roughly every 500-800 rds (gkids live out of state) and they run like sewing machines!)
