Hey y’all, I’ve been looking for a tactical shotgun that would let me attach a light/laser, sling, foregrip, and maybe even a small optic. I’m new to shotguns and only shot them once while skeet shooting. I would prefer the barrel to run a little shorter than normal and a pistol grip would be a plus. If anybody could help me find one with some of these criteria I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Mine is a Winchester SX2 Practical Tactical. No longer made. The standard SX4 in black is less than a grand is a soft shooting shotty. Skys the limit would be a Benelli M4 at somewhere between $1800 and $2000.

Two biggest gripes with my Nova Tactical is 1) the length of pull is LONG, I had to cut an inch+ off mine, which requires a slip on butt pad, and 2) it is difficult to add accessories to, pretty much locked into having to drill and tap receiver if you want aftermarket sights, and to add tube extension accessories for sling/light mounts.

Personally I would recommend a Mossberg 500, 590, 590a1 or a Beretta 1301 and sink some money into aridus industries upgrades for the 1301. I love both of mine....but they're both no longer stock configuration and it can get expensive.both of mine have magpul stocks that i have adjusted to length of pull and the foreends are both upgraded to accept mlok for lights, etc.

Beretta 1301 Tactical.
I love mine...just finished getting some stuff for it. Aridus QDC, red dot, tlr rlm1, etc. Love the aridus industries zhukov front end and the magpul stick adapter. Added a matchsaverz on it...its a thing of beauty....and runs like a champ.

Picture?

For HD I prefer a SBR AR in 300BLK.
I have a Benelli M1 tactical that I replaced the pistol grip for a standard stock.

Beretta 1301 and Benelli M4 would be among the top choices but pricey. Sx4 is a very very good platform to customize also. I have a SX3 (same action as SX4) with at least 10,000 rounds thru it and it just works.

Get a model 500 or 870, pumps are cheaper and more forgiving. Practice running it versus adding equipment. Sling gets in the way for “bumps in the night”, optic won’t get used at HD distance or if you’re drowsy. Get a good light (laser dot optional), but be careful using it to search with. HD should mean you pick a good defendable spot and make them come down the funnel to you.
But, you do you and if you want an auto, go for it !

A lot of good recommendations here, though some expensive ones too.

Depending on your budget, a good (relatively cheap) Mossberg 500/590 or even a Maverick 88 configured well can be a fantastic weapon.

Pic is of my 20" M500, short magpul stock, Streamlight TLRacker forend (1000lm flashlight), a quality side saddle, a simple holosun on a KE arms aimpoint mount, and a vickers sling choked in nice and streamlined than can be quickly opened up if needed. Everything I need, nothing I don't. 7 in the tube, 6 on the saddle, and still a relatively cheap set up.

I have thousands of shells through this setup and it runs like a champ. It may not be my first choice for HD, but it stays very easily accessible.

Seems like the 1301 is the slightly better gun, but depending on how you use it, you might never know. Different gas system and non chrome on the inside.

My problem with a pump shotgun for a relative newbie for home defense is developing the ability to pump it without thinking about it. If you get a pump consider shooting a flat (10 boxes) of #8s on the skeet, trap or sporting clays range until you get the hang of it. I got a Wingmaster 870 at age 16 and pumping it became second nature. When I started shooting semis and o/u again in about 2006, I found I couldn't automatically pump the old 870 when I got it out for sporting clays.

Semis are easier to manipulate, but need to be shot enough to make sure they are reliable. I've seen semis choke on various shells, and they can be as picky on ammo as some handguns. A dirty, dry or otherwise neglected semi-auto shotgun is prone to misfeed at the worst possible time.

Also keep in mind that for indoor shooting, shotguns are not "scatterguns" you can wield without aiming. The pattern at 21 feet might not be 12 inches wide, depending on load and choke. Here is one pattern I found using 00 buckshot, Mossberg 590, 18.5" barrel, choke undisclosed.

If you have the extra cash, check out Langdon’s 1301. They do a special build, so when it arrives, you have a turn key bad boy scatter gun!

Got on the list to be notified when available...
In IMHO, it’s the best deal going if you plan on doing any upgrades. By the time you purchased the accessories and installed them, you’ll be right at the same cost, but would lack the professional install.

Watched the videos on the 1301 and feel it suits me right out the box...Got weak and went on Bereli.com and ordered a 1301 Tactical 12 GA 18.5" 7+1 LE for $1405+ tax.... no more searching and waiting on shops to call me back...selected next day air too.... Appreciate all the comments and opinions...
