As I will be home with the wife for a week as she recuperates from back surgery, I figured I'd need something to pass the time. Stainless Commander 1911, low mounted dot sight, bobtail frame, etc... a fancy carry gun. The slide I have is bald, so instead of cocking serrations, I am thinking engraving Celtic knotwork.
Opinions? Is it too busy?
I need to just cut it on some scrap and get a better idea

I didn’t think I would like that but it actually looks amazing!

That is very nice! Its not too busy. Maybe needs a little something in the spaces where there is nothing to blend it in?

Since you are milling the side are you planning anything for the top? I think a grooved flat top on a 1911 gives it a little extra pop … maybe you can think of a Celtic twist on grooves if you like the flat top idea?

The pictures do not quite do it justice.
Slide/frame/barrel fit is as good as I have ever done. No idea on accuracy yet... I thought I had a 4mm tap for the optic. I was mistaken. I will have one in a couple days. Only ran a couple mags, zero malfunctions. Nothing shoots as sweet as a 9mm 1911

I just bought two more 80% frames from spectresupply1 on GB
$99 ($121 wit tax/cc fees/shipping) is a killer deal and I understand when the new rule goes into effect in August, these will be gone

Thanks for the tip on that vendor. Is this one a 4 or 4.25 inch barrel? Looks like the only commander slides I see left from them are 4 inch.

Came out real nice. What do you draw the pattern in and then use to convert to a model or tool path? I’ve done image to dxf to solid model before. Curious if you do that or all in modeling software.

Also, what cutters did you use for the vertical lines and knot work? The vertical lines look thinner.

I have a dxf engraving add on for the Centroid cnc controller. I drew the knotwork in Cadkey
all the engraving was done with a 1/32 carbide ball endmill. the vertical lines are just not as deep

I'm going to dig up an old thread that provoked a winter project. Do you typically order all of the small parts as a kit or piece them together? And a preferred vendor for small parts or barrels/slides? Seems like Fusion offers the most options for reasonably priced slides.

Most "kits" I have seen are low end parts, so I shop around for decent brand/decent price. As for slides and barrels, I found a couple of vendors on ebay I like. The slide on this gun was supposedly a Wilson second. The flats were .010" taller on one side than the other.
