Some of you know that my 17-year old son makes knives. He started when he was 13 and is largely self taught. I bought this one from him this weekend. He made it for himself, but decided to sell it and chase another design. LOL

3” blade. 7” overall. Made from a 1/4” antique file he found at a flea market. The scales are from a block of mystery wood that came out of a deceased gunmaker’s estate I bought years ago. Some wood guys on a knife forum thought it is flame box elder when he posted a pic of the block. Whatever it is, it sure has simple beauty and elegance.

He made the sheath and firesteel as well. I plan on using it backpacking and hiking. It is big enough to do most chores one would need to do while still being small enough to not get in the way, whether on a belt or lashed somewhere on my pack. I’ll add a paracord lanyard.

Awesome work. I like how he left the grooves from the file on it and I'm sure that helps with the firesteel.

OK, so its an amazing piece...so the next logical question is "Does he has a website or somewhere he can take orders?"

LOL. I was just showing off (proud papa). Wasn't meaning to hawk his wares.

He doesn't have a website yet, but you can find him on Facebook at JW Custom Knives. He doesn't list inventory there, but you can see some of what he has made and contact him through it for orders. He has gotten a surprising number of orders from people looking at his latest projects. He hasn't done a whole lot this summer due to spending most of his time volunteering at a local summer camp, but he is back home and spending gobs of time in my, er, his shop again.

If you don't do Facebook (and I don't blame you if you don't), I can PM you his email address.

Rare to see a young man who is interested in something other than a computer. Awesome work.

He likely won't be there this weekend, but we haven't finalized which kids are working.

I don't do Facebook, so I was hoping to see some of his work in person.
    Maybe next time.

He ought’a search out more files. Seems that design would be in good demand. ;)

He buys all he can find that are of good enough quality steel. He is very picky about that.

That is awesome. The craftsmanship is exceptional.

Normally file knives with the teeth left on it are "meh" but that one is amazing.

For such a young man, to already have such an eye for the details, much less the skill to create such is a rarity in this world.

    That is amazing all around!

You should encourage him to spend more time crafting his wares, not doing random chores, like yard work! Heh, heh.

That's some mighty fine craftsmanship. Awesome that such a young man has such an eye for detail like he does. Might be a viable way to provide a pretty decent living.

I’d buy one of those. But alas, no face book for me either. Maybe he needs to build a right proper website a d start taking credit cards.

He doesn’t want a website until he can handle a higher volume of orders. He still has school, working for his dad, etc. to vie for his time.

He can take credit cards through PayPal or my business card processor.

Screw his Dad. Let him know I know someone that can build his website very cheaply. :p

LOL. I showed him this thread this evening and now he is talking about maybe needing a website.

I still need the lawn mowed, trucks loaded, etc., though. We'll have to come to a compromise.
