I'm not that familiar with Zebulon, but there are lots of places -- some great local gun shops, a few ranges within 30-45 minutes or so and a generally shooter-friendly area. A few of my favorites close enough to you are Liberty Defense in Zebulon, OnPoint Firing Range, Perry's Gun Shop in Wendell, Clayton Guns, Carolina GunRunners, Liberty Defense, and others further away like the great ranges at ENC in Dudley, and one over toward Rocky Mount whose names escapes me.

Depending in how new you are I'd find a friendly place where you can buy guns and ammo and take a class or two.
