Night Sights

I think we should get together and take the opportunity to do some testing. We'll find out a bunch by live fire. I volunteer my access to 60 acres with a nice shop building on it. We can shoot there at night no problem. We can set up some scenarios/tests and run them. The only way to validate or disprove all this is with live fire on the timer and see what the targets reveal. We can shoot, film it and post up results here. I'm just outside of the Charlotte area down in SC. Im willing to host if you are willing to contribute.
A great opportunity to add quality content to CFF!
I won't be able to make it, but I will say this: there is no way you can set up every potential scenario let alone change anyone's mind on either side. Having night sights will not hurt a thing. Not having them MAY put you in a disadvantage (however sight it might be). It's not like adding a turbo to your car where if it fails your car leaves you stranded.

I'm saying all this while there is a Glock on my hip that has factory DooDoo sights on it.I can run whatever sights are handed to me so I don't care. I also keep my guns pretty stock unless it's to put steel sights on a Glock which are usually night sights because, well, let's face it: are better than factory plastic glock sights. I don't really see why it's a big deal.

Good input! Thx!
I wasn't expecting anybody to drop what they were doing, but it might be something some of us could plan for in the next few months for those who are interested.

Setting up 3-5 semi-common scenarios and doing some testing for all to benefit would be way more beneficial than setting up none.

As to night sights, I don't care if anybody buys them or not. It's their money. If they ask for thoughts, I try to back my points with in-person range experiences.

A few of us CFF folk getting together to do something like this is good for all.

In the end, targets don't lie... They are the "book" that tells the shooter everything they need to know about the engagements. I think the readership here at CFF would appreciate good, solid test videos and results on this subject.

• Did you find you are able to shoot it more accurately or ?

•Have you shot it at night since mounting?
Faster or more consistent sight picture in daylight . I changed my edc to a vp9 with the stupid glow in the dark sights before I shot the 1911 at night. I find the glow in the dark to be nothing but distracting.

Depending on the night, IN!

I’m starting to come around to fiber optics. Thing is, if you have a weapon mounted light, most times when you’re indoors, the splash of the light off of walls will overpower any light you’d see from tritium sights, making them pretty useless. However, most of my pistols have night sights and I just ordered another set of Ameriglos for my only g19 without a set. I like the big orange outline around the tritium more so than the tritium dots.

Anyway, regarding fiber optics, they will gather a ton of light from a weapon light, so a front fiber optic sight will shine much brighter than any tritium sight when used in conjunction with a wml. This is all my personal opinion and I’ve never stayed at a Holdau Inn express. For what’s it worth, my current HD gun is a TRP (no rail) in .45 with simple tritium sights.

for a pistol that’s only occasionally suppressed, the KNS flip up sights look nifty. I’ve no experience with them but everything else from KNS has been solid for me.

I’m sure this has been said already, but before you spend the money on night sights, think carefully about how you really intend use those sights in the dark. Hackathorn teaches (or taught...) to illuminate the target to identify, cut light, move off-line and shoot into the mental snapshot you took of your target, using your night sights. That’s a poor description, I’m sure, but the point is this: I thought it was bulls*** at the class and think it’s bulls*** now. The only shooting I’ve ever been involved in was in broad daylight, and I can tell you that if it had been in the dark, I would probably not have been able to successfully apply that technique. Nor would I personally be comfortable firing at a dark target. In any event, I have gotten rid of my night sights a long time ago. With a white light beyond, any set of sights will provide a usable silhouette (assuming you remember to look at them...). My unsolicited $.02.

Edit to add: Federal HST has a very deep red muzzle flash and is pretty decent on your eyes in the dark.

Nice

Depending on when, I'm in. I've done night shooting classes before, but I'm always up for more training, especially when scenario based. I'll also bring a RMR'd pistol, with WML to try out also.

Thinking about putting a set of night sights on a Glock 19 with a can.
Any suggestions?
I went through that decision a few years back. Night sights light up the sights pretty good but in the dark if I can't see the target they are not doing me much good. The next thought was a laser. Once again if I can't see the target I do not know where to point the laser. A laser does not put out much residual light but it does give away your position. It can be useful though. Next thought was a mounted flashlight. It will definitely light up your target. It will also give away your position but you can use it to blind the target. Personally I do not like a bunch of gadgets hanging off my handgun. They just get in my way. I decided against that. I ended up buying a decent flashlight that I can operate with the thumb of my left hand . Holding my left arm horizontally in front of me I can rest my right wrist on top of my left for better shot placement. This also gives me more maneuverability with the handgun and the flashlight. That was my conclusion and that is what I still do now. I do have a light and reflex sight mounted on my shotgun. They do add moderate weight to the firearm but there is much more room and they do not get in my way. My eyes are shot hence the reflex sight. It was the best option I could come up with. This is just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.
