They were great bikes, if you like cruisers.

Hard to take on HD.

Not really. The japanese have been making better bikes than HD for decades. Chrome want get ya home.

A fellow I know once asked me to take his Kawasaki Vulcan for a ride. I couldn't do it and wouldn't do it. Told the guy no slam against him personally but that I didn't want anyone I knew to see me and possibly ruin my reputation.

LOL Cocked & Locked

HD is like THE BIKE, deserved reputation or not. I am not a fan boi and have always had zuki sportbikes til my gix 1000 almost killed me.

I am looking at getting a road king this year. Not because I want to be a 1%er, but because I iknow if i get any other crusier I would always wish i had gotten THE cruiser.

Maybe Polaris will bring back the old Indian inline 4 now? Everyone has a Vtwin. Bring out something different for a change.

I'd rather push my Harley than ride any Jap bike.

You don't ride much then.

Couldn't agree more. I come from a sport riding/touring background. I have owned many bikes and ridden several hundred thousand miles on them all over and have never owned a HD. Because they can not provide the performance I expect and require. But you can tell by the reactions here that to many, the "image" of riding is mort important than the performance, or capability of the bike itself. It's like refusing to shoot guns, unless they are a Colt 1911. THAT is what the Japanese will never overcome: "the Image".
It's also what Victory failed to overcome.

All that said, the truth is the Japanese, and Victory, have never quite got it right. As hard as they have tried, they have been unable to capture the true spirit of riding a Harley Davidson. The sound, the feel, the pride or ownership, the top paint quality, the resale value, the pirate outfits, etc. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

Sure, a Star or a Shadow is a nice enough cruiser. But, I'd rather have a Streetglide. It's got all the performance one would need on this type of bike. Hell, there's actually several models I would be happy to own. If I were buying a cruiser, I'd likely not buy Japanese. Never saw a Japanese cruiser that didn't look like a cheaper copy of a HD, because that is precisely what they are. They have spend billions trying to copy an HD. Who cares if their bikes make more power? It's a cruiser.

Just my opinion.

I don't like Jap bikes. They just don't suite me. It's a preference thing, like Ford or Chevy etc. I've always had Harleys and always will. You just can't get a rice burning Ultra classic. You can't.
No. But you can get a rice burning Goldwing that will smoke an Ultra.

It's a cruiser, not a drag bike. Plus I doubt that.

Just about anything will smoke an Ultra. Heh.

I don't understand the Ford vs. Chevy thing as I have had both and would rather have a Toyota. But too each their own!

Lately I've been digging several Harleys, getting old being the likely culprit.

But I have to say I find these Roadsters amazing looking. And, although I wouldn't call the motor or suspension/brakes cutting edge, they are plenty to have fun on the street.

I used to work at a dealership and one of our brands was Polaris and Victory. They are both absolute junk compared to what the Japanese produce. I know every unit has its own issues but we were constantly servicing Polaris 4 wheelers and Victory motorcycles….their fuel injection was horrible. In the rare event they were running right they did make good power and responded well to cam shafts but the constant tinkering they required was ridiculous.
Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki….put gas in it and go.

Don’t even get me started on how much I hate HD and their retarded fan boys.

HA!!!

There are a few HDs I like.....but I like the older ones the best (40s).

If I could have the bike I want.....I'd get a Goldwing.

DS

The new ones look like crap, but back when they looked like real motorcycles...Valkyrie!

If you don't like maintenance....... get a Jap bike. Change the fluids and filters as needed and ride.
If you do like maintenance.......get a Harley. Along with the fluid and filter changes, you will be repairing and replacing things along the way.
Harley is more about image and pride than anything......

Have you owned a Harley? I haven't had a lick of trouble outta mine. Or the one before that. Outside of regular maintenance.

Welcome to the forum.

I used to dream night and day of owning a HD. I bought magazines about them and spent a good deal of my spare time picking out parts to put together my dream bike. I wrecked my car and needed transportation so off to Ray Price I went. I looked around and could find nothing in my price range so I left head hanging low and proceeded up the street to see if Barnett's had any used HD's as a last resort. They didn't, but they did have a brand new Suzuki Bandit for exactly what I had in my pocket. So out of nessesity I bought it. I had owned it for about 3 months and Ray Price ran a ad for a open house where if you had a valid motorcycle license you could ride anything they had in the line up. Oh god I was just so excited I couldn't wait! So the day finaly came, I went down there and rode every bike they had including the Buells. I can honestly say I have never been more disappointed in all my life, the bikes I had lusted over all these years turned out to be total under performers. There was not a single model that did anything as good as my Suzuki. The handling, braking, acceleration and the ride where not even close to my Bandit in any way. There was not one thing any of those HD's could do better at three to 4 times the price. I have never wanted a Harley since that day. The only exception would maybe be a Harley with a jap motor suspesion and brakes, but then that would just be a custom and not a Harley.

If you're trying to make some sort of comparison maybe the rider's ability should be taken into account. It would be hard to find many riders who have more time at Deals Gap than Yellow Wolf. I've been passed by him, he rides that Gold Wing like it's a GSXR.
I didn't even have to click the link to know the Goldwing was Yellow Wolf. He lives in that area and rides that road constantly, knows it like the back of his hand, escorted riding groups etc.. Give him a FLH___ and some time to learn the bike, guarantee you the result would be the same.

Lets put SPST in a Formula 1 car and see how he stacks up against Michael Schumacher. Same comparison IMO

Still kicking ass on flat tracks everywhere!

They really got that bike right. Imagine a real street verion of that. Not the porky one they came out with a few years back, although I liked that one a lot, too.

I'd smoke Schumacher now since he is messed up, if he is even still alive? And I doubt Yellow Wolf could make as good of time on a FLH no matter how much time he had on it.

I've don't like the looks of the newer Valkyries either, but love the older ones, mine is a 98. But I also love my Harleys, I have a 75 and a 2006. I'm not a diehard brand specific guy, I just like to ride. That being said, my Valkyrie will smoke the hell out of my Fatboy, and most other Harleys.

I love the exhaust note of that flat six. If it's got the right pipes on it, it sounds like a Porsche six.

This really is a shame. According to a friend of mine, Victory brought Porsche in as a consultant on the engine design and used a lot of Porsche air cooled technology in the engine.

I have always liked the styling of the Victorys, I just have never had a chance to ride one. I guess that won't ever happen now. I bet some of them will be worth some money down the road.

Looks like they might reinvest resources in the Indian brand. There is lots of potential With Indian bikes, just too expensive.
Now my disclaimer- The ones that can recognize these names can probably guess my age.
Grew up riding dirt bikes when all I had to ride was an Ossa, I even rode a Bultaco. and a Hodaka combat wombat.
First street bike was a Harley SX250 Enduro.
I always kept a Harley to ride, pans, iron heads, and shovels, Current rider is a 1981 FLH I have had 35 years. When I leave the house,I have to bolt back on what fell off last ride. Part of riding old stuff. But at the same time, I have had Hondas Bought a new CB750 in 76, Had V45's V65's Magnas, Even bought A new GPZ750 Kaw Turbo in '84.Fastest thing I ever rode.
So Brand loyal? Yes to Harley
Open to others? Yes, I just love to ride.
Is one better than others? I have broke them all and fixed them all.Newer ones are all better for sure.
By the way, The Old Harley Enduros were the biggest POS that ever came out of Italy
