Not chasing food if things get worse

I need a new rice cooker.

Here ya go, glad to be of service.

one of the first things that disappeared from Sams and Costco was the bulk rice.

50 pound put up and ready to go.

Love those bottles. I store rice, sugar and dried beans in them.
Hey, we’re all coming to your house now! :p

Just be sure to also stock plenty of go with, spices. sweets, etc. Beans and rice can get really old.

Oh, it’s not the same. Sure you can make it in a pot or pan, but it’s better in a rice cooker.

Yup. As a (half) Asian, I 100% agree.

Most old school Asians (60+ years old) are so tight with their money they could make change for a penny. Yet all of them own a rice pot despite being able to cook rice on a stove.

There's no comparison between stove top and rice cooker rice.

i've had the cheap $10-20 rice cookers for a long time. my mom made fun of me because all you need is a pot, but the cheap rice cookers were mostly fine for tossing in a measured amount and walking away.
We put a zojirushi on our wedding registry and we're glad we have it.

At the risk of thread derail, what about rice cook mode on an instant pot?anyone try it?

Gotta warn you about the second from the left bottle, man. That ain't sugar.

I’ve been thinking this or Tiger. Tiger seems more versatile, but maybe not quite as good for rice. Seems that maybe they incorporated a lot of programming from something like the insta-pot. The two chamber mode seems cool, but do you really steam your fish or vegetables for the same time as your rice, probably not.

I only use mine for rice. and vegetables...
but yeah, i buy the frozen mix of carrots corn peas greenbeans whatever and throw them in the steamer tray. sometimes when i'm lazy i just put them in with the rice after i measure things out. either way works for my needs.

but i think it's probably more accurate to say that the instapots have stolen the programming from the rice cookers. the cookers have been able to do all sorts of stuff for decades, just without the pressure cooker aspect. instapot.. well i guess i don't know when they started doing everything and more

Have any of yall checked the Asian grocery stores for rice?

It's been about a month since I last went to the one we shop at in Cary, but they had literally hundreds (maybe thousands?) of 25 and 50 pound bags.

I may have. Been a long time ago.....years. If memory serves (which is rare by the way), I think he said his wife got them from work. I think I bought them for like 50 cents a bottle but like I said, that was LONG ago.....
Probably was. I got at least two cases of them from him. That was a loooooong time ago.

How long are you guys storing rice?
From what I gather, if it's vacuum sealed properly it's only good for 2-3 years. I say "only" because that info surprised me.

I suspect if you're hungry it will last far longer.

Vacuum sealed with a oxygen absorber, then put into a mylar bag that is heat sealed.

I just ate some that was minimum 10 years old. The rotation was boned when I moved and my masking tape labels fell off on the moving truck. I'm mid-way through just eating it and replacing with new. Not dead yet.

I store rice in the bag it came in. No need to do anything else to it. I've personally stored and eaten rice 10 years old, and it was just fine.

What I’ve read says that it depends on the type of rice. White, jasmin, basmati with vac and O2 absorber in the cool dark seems like 2 or 3 decades.

I wouldn’t mind packing up some steel cut oats too.

thinking toss in some food grade silica gel, an 02 absorber and then vac.

Trying to decide on mylar bags in buckets or canning jars in cases. Probably the former.

You cannot put both a oxygen absorber and moisture absorber in the same package. One makes the other not work.
Whoops, good to know! Thanks!

Good on him. Hope he’s doing well. Been years since I recall even seeing him post.
