Im trying to figure out how to go about notifying the atf of an address change as we are moving . I found a few explanations on google but they didnt make alot of sense as i am horrible when it comes to things like paperwork lol . Hopeing someone can give a simplified explination of how to go about doing this .ty

Please tell me they haven't complicated the simple task of telling them your new address.
It’s very simple. 5320.20 form. Not sure what the confusion is.

(Other than the fact the form says “temporary” and “interstate”…but is also used for permanent and/or intrastate 🤓)

How about a web page with spaces for an address change that they could build inba few hours and you could fill out in a few seconds?

B.W. beat me to it. Here is a link to the form, it should be fillable. Once complete print and mail in.

Could easily be in eForms. No FFL involvement.

However, I do file paper forms every year for about a dozen firearms for ten different states. Takes me about 60 seconds from start to finish and I submit via email.

They tried to screw mine up. Gave em all the dates, current address, new permanent address, etc. 'n they mailed em to the new address over 2 weeks prior to the move date. Thankfully, we closed 2 weeks before the actual move & the sellers gave us our mail.

Seller/neighbor was ribbin' me about what I'd done to draw that particular agency's attention. Told him what it was for & he just chuckled & shook his head.

Why does the ATF need to know if you move?

ain't that the website that's only open between like 9am and 6pm, closed sundays and wednesdays?
i really don't understand eforms AT ALL, despite having done a few form 1 entries just fine.

one of my counterparts at a different work location laughed at me this afternoon because, yes the company has openings all over - but i'd lose a fortune in guns if i went to some states. He said my collection must be huge. I claimed it was modest.
He said "i've worked with you for 2 years, you've told me about probably 40 guns you've bought... and that's not counting what you already had"
i gotta shut up more often

It scheduled down on Wednesdays from 8a-5p (or something close to that). It does occasionally go down at other times.

We have an armory not an arsenal.😀

I find that happening too, we had a "say a fun fact about yourself" in one of our meetings and I couldn't think of any more, They wanted a handful, my boss asked how many guns I have and I said "not enough" he didn't really appreciate the answer.

I was actually wondering about this the other day. I will hopefully be getting my cans soon as they’ve been pending since early February but I will also be moving this coming March. I do plan to purchase a home where I’m going but that possibly might not happen before I get there so potentially I will be moving without knowing what my new address will be. Any ideas of how to handle that situation?

You are not required to notify change of address for cans, strange as it might seem.

Oh that’s great news. I was concerned I was going to have to find some place to store them till I could get an address.

For temporary travel, correct. For permanent move out of state, it’s a little more confusing.

So @Derek8404 can file a temp form (for up to a years time) using any address in the new state. Pick a range and use theirs. Then file a permanent move once you’re settled and you can provide your new mailing address on the form for them to send the forms to.

Good to know. I should probably get started on those forms soon as my cans get approved.

I guess I better get caught up then. I thought I was up to speed on that 'loophole'. Did that change or recently have a new interpretation?

Not sure what you’re calling a “loophole”.

For example, the Form 4 says:

Change of Address: Unless currently licensed under the Gun Control Act, the registrant shall notify the NFA Division, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,Firearmsand Explosives, 244 Needy Road, Martinsburg, WV 25405, in writing, of any change to the address in item 2a.

You just don’t need permission ahead of time to cross a state line with a silencer (or AOW).

And yes, all kinds of people will say not to notify of an in-state move.

People are wrong about a lot of stuff. Its not required for an in state move. It can really gum things up if you move, dont notify and then sell something . I did it once with a GSG-5 I made into a integrally silenced gun. Moved in state and didnt notify .. Didnt like it one bit. Sold it on a form 4 in state . The ATF sends the finished paperwork to the old address and my POS renter threw it in the garbage. Seems no matter what you put on the form 4 they go by the address on file.

And I completely forgot about this until @DrScaryGuy brought it up in another thread. So how long do the 5320.20’s take to come back approved? I punching out of VA here in less than 30 days and heading to AZ. Will I get it back in time? Could I put the new AZ Address as the address to have the approved forms mailed to?

@BigWaylon

Email them in. There’s a spot on the form to provide a mailing address if different than the registered “from” address.

Usually 2-3 weeks. You can submit them by email.

I imagine with the holidays there is a good chance I wouldn’t have it back in time before I leave. Could I have it sent to the address I’m moving to in AZ?

"The form can be submitted via facsimile to the NFA Division at (304) 616-4501 or may be scanned and emailed to [email protected]."
that's from the instructions 5320.20 part b

Perfect. I’ll have it sent to AZ then. Do I need to do a separate form for each can, or am I able to list them all on the same form?

Form has 3 lines. If it’s just cans, you can wait until you’re moved and settled in. They don’t need permission to cross state lines.

Ok that’s great. I’ll just do that then once I get there. Thanks again for your help!

not saying to break any laws or anything...
but hypothetically, if you accidentally took your SBR/SBS (aow is fine, just like cans) to the new state before filing paperwork... the only way they'd notice is if you tried to file for a new form 1/4 and they said "wait a second, these states don't match up"
Not a whole lot of people look at stamps, much less look for 5320.20 forms or even know about them.

Currently only have the cans, but I’ll likely register a couple of my lowers, and I’ll wait till I file the 5320.20 before doing that.
