I want to try out a Magpul PRS stock on my Tikka. The Tikka uses an AR style buffer tube connection BUT there's no way to use a carbine style end plate to prevent the tube from rotating once it's in place. Tikka uses a set screw tapped into the threads of their stock assembly to limit rotation. So...I need to drill/tap through the threads of a rifle tube so I can use their set screw.

Problem is that I don't have any taps and don't really feel like buying a set just for this one evolution.

I'll need to slide by the local hardware to check out the screw, but it looks to be something like M3-.5-10

I can pay in beer and comic relief.

Tim

Sounds like the assembly is threaded and all you need to do is screw in the buffer tube, drop some lead shot into the setscrew hole so you don’t bugger the threads and then tighten down the set screw. There is a good chance that I just don’t understand, but I wanted to comment in case of free beer.

I can’t imagine trying to tap a buffer tube. They’re pretty thin.

I've been scouring the interwebz for a pic of the factory issue setup to no avail. I'll snap a couple pics tonight.

Tim: We can do that for you...probably have screws we can use too!!

This is what I’m talking about...

Easy peasy with a tap to do that.... Though, the threads on that set screw look a little wonky.

The top threads are getting bashed by the receiver. I don’t know why tightening the castle nut against the receiver isn’t sufficient to hold everything, but apparently it isn’t. What does the grub screw actually tighten against?

Nada. It’s there to limit rotation. The factory stock is not on an actual buffer tube, it just mates up that way.

A RIFLE receiver extension doesn’t have enough threads to use a castle but. With an AR receiver the stock or end plate has that little nubbin that slots into the cavity on the receiver to prevent rotation. No such cavity on this rifle, I need to find a way to limit the rotation.

Oh, I think I see it...
The set screw is to center / keep vertical the stock by riding in that slot,
Then the lock nut to hold it tight.

Bingo

Tim, plug the end of your buffer tube with just enough material such as aluminum or delrin, then you can drill and tap into the plug without fear of anything stripping threads.

@Tim, you have my address, ship both tubes to me and I will do it for you myself.

This or maybe tap the far side and use a long cap screw. It’s just not right having a loose screw.

Maybe a cap screw from each side with a barrel nut inside?

Tim. I really don’t like that set up. I’m sure it will work...but. With out actually seeing it. Looks like a 8 or 10-32 set screw. And Mirac is right that screw is wonky!
I would use a socket head cap screw. Turn it down to match the slot. Set up and spot face the tube and then tap it.
That should give you a smooth and fitted stop to keep your stock from moving and give it a solid “stop” for the screw to be tightened against. I only see using loctite to hold the set screw in place. And the edges of the threads chewing up the stock.
FWIW. Phil

I've given up on this idea. I was able to get the Magpul PRS stock in place long enough to decide it doesn't really work. The geometry is just off. So, I'm sticking with the factory Tikka stock.

Thanks for the offer to help, I do appreciate it!
