A friend dropped his Navy Arms O/U off to me today to take a look at. I'm not a gunsmith, but I don't mind breaking other people's stuff, holding onto it for 18 months and giving it back un-fixed with a large invoice attached.

Anyway. The top barrel won't fire. Light primer strikes. It's hard to tell from these pics, but easy to see in person that the pin is sitting 'low' in the race. There's even a bit of wear on the race from what looks like years of friction.

Question is if I try tearing this thing down all the way, how likely am I to get myself in trouble? I'm hoping a little bit of cleaning inside the action and maybe a fresh spring or a bit of bending stuff around will straighten things out.

Thoughts?

Kinda weird. Its probably been dry fired alot.

Big no-no in double guns.

I would think new firing pin. With age the head of the pin where the hammer strikes it can get worn down and change the angle that the pin moves forward. That may have caused the out of round firing pin opening. IMHO

Overall value of gun may limit your options. Is a replacement firing pin available or will it have to be made? Sometimes dirt anfd oil lint can over the years get in firing pin channel an shorten the travel. only takes a 1/2 mm to cause problems if its already worn some.
https://www.brownells.com/ has some shotgun firing pins. I think Navy arms copied some o/u's from popular gun makers. May fine one that is close enough to properly fit.
