No one wants to buy the MSR-15 I had listed so I decided to turn it into something I would like. This means a new barrel and handguard set up. What I didn't know is that everything front of the upper receiver is proprietary. Check this out.

Here's the barrel after I got it off. It required a pipe wrench because the adjustable wasn't breaking free the 200 foot pounds used to secure the gas block and barrel nut and neither uses a standard wrench size. My wrenches are good enough for working on cars and trucks, but not good enough for this barrel apparently.

I have never seen a gas block like this. It is held on by a threaded collar.

3.jpg
Here's the collar removed.

4.jpg
And the gas block proper is held on by an indexing tab on the gas block that fits against the barrel. No way you could get your port out of alignment.

5.jpg
The indexing pin on the gas block. Not sure why there's a hold on the underside. There's no threads there and why would you need a set screw there?

Most curious of all though are the marks on the barrel. "K8"?

"MC"? Are these Savage barrels made by Mossberg? It's not "C MP", but "MC"?

This was an accurate barrel but it weighs just shy of 2.5 pounds. It's ridiculously heavy. It weighs more than your average government profile 20 inch A2 barrel and I just didn't enjoy shooting it.

It looks just like the Knights Armament system

I think the new Q rifle also does the jam nut gas block method.
Didn't know that, but I've never been tempted to spend KAC money on an AR-15.
Interesting that this "budget" Savage is using the same process some "high end" manufacturers are.

That’s actually pretty surprising. As noted, there are a handful of high end manufacturers that use that system. I wonder if it was done to keep parts compatible with their competition line that uses proof research barrels configured the same way.

Interesting system.
It is certainly better than the set screw system. it must somehow be Cheaper/easier than drilling and pinning. I would bet the labor to set up and drill is more expensive than the extra machining cost.

It would be almost impossible for your minimum wage staff to screw up the alignment as well.
I'm looking at you, PSA.

The hole is to allow tool access to drill out the hole into the gas tube area.
Me right now.

Also has the straight gas tube. Only thing it’s missing is the flared end and proprietary length.

Finally got me a wrench to remove my KAC gas block. Just need the URX4 wrench 😓

Where’s the barrel nut that fastens to the upper? Did you already pull the gas block, then nut before taking the pictures?

Yeah, it's proprietary as well but standard barrel nut, just with with wrench flats that don't seem to fit any wrench. It also doesn't make any contact with your gas tube, so the gas tube just "floats" in the upper.

I barely knew they even built an AR to begin with, peculiar.

I just wanted to say, I wanted to buy it but I was just a bit too far away and didn’t have any travel time.
Interesting setup.

Wonder if a good machinist could turn it down? And source a lighter nut?

Did you change the gas block as part of the mods? I put a suppressor on my MSR15 and it's now over gassed. I'm looking for an adj gb that will install with the savage barrel setup.

I really doubt you'd be able to easily put a new gas block on the Savage barrel.

Looks like they used similar GB mounting system for their adjustable gas rifle.

Crazy looking GB on this thing. Pretty good pics if you scroll down. I imagine there's zero chance of sourcing one of these.:

Unfortunately, Savage is less than helpful. I'm tired of them sending me to "Blackhawk" for an answer. Thanks for the info.
