Whats everyone's thoughts on on older Christmas movies? We-being older and not caring for the garbage being put out now-love our Christmas movies (and start binge watching them earlier and earlier every year.) I think we stated in SEPTEMBER this year, showing our need for wholesome feel-good movies centered around the meaning of Christmas (i.e., Christ) along with goodness and family.
Of course we are also like most of the standard fare (Christmas Vacation, Elf, It's A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, etc.) but we (but me more than my wife) really like the older lesser-known classics also.
Some we have only "discovered" in the last 10 years or so:
The Bishops Wife 1947 We watch it a least every two weeks around Christmas-I'm a big fan of David Niven anyway and Cary Grant is tha man!
A Christmas Carol 1951 Only started watching this last Christmas, after hearing it was a good version and that the anti-gun Canadian American actor that played Scrooge in the animated 2009 edition "modeled" his take of Scrooge on Alastair Sim in this classic.
The Shop Around The Corner 1947 Jimmy Stewart is probably my favorite actor based on his overall life and acting, and I had never seen this one until seeing it mentioned in an article about old Christmas movies; we really like it and watch it at least 4 -5 times a year. The premise (adapted from a setting in Hungary, and using Hungarian signage and currency, i.e. "penga") was a little confusing to me in the start but I got it eventually.
White Christmas Believe it or not, even though it's a classic, I never watched it until I was in my 40s. It's now my favorite Christmas movie of all time. I still shed a tear at the end.
Holiday Inn Only discovered a few years ago, but love it.
Christmas in Connecticut Again, only "found" a few years ago but part of our Christmas movies.
Remember the Night About the same as the foregoing one
Lemon Drop Kid My wife this on a DVD at a "Mighty Dollar" store and brought it home. We didn't expect much, having never seen the movie, but we both fell in love with it. Another one of our favorites.
I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two more we like.
I hope some of you are in this same boat on movies(?)
