Old time music

A old Stanley Brothers song to kick off the Christmas season. Probably the best version I’ve heard is by Emmylou Harris.

Got to see/hear Ricky in person a couple years ago at the Don Gibson in Shelby. He's a national treasure, and I got to meet him at the merch table after-so pleasant and genuine.

Since this is my first post in this thread I'll thrown out that I'm a Seldom Scene man!

Also, anyone here ever ate at Simms BBQ in Dudley Shoals? I haven't been there in years (MANY years) but they have all you can eat BBQ and clogging and bluegrass...or at least they used to.

Both of my grandfathers and three of my great grandfathers were coal miners. Two died from injuries when the roof of the mine fell on them.

Thank you. That song hits a strong chord with me. My great aunt died this year at age 97. One of her few memories of her father is seeing him in the ambulance in 1931 after his injury. He died within 10 days. Her mother had passed in 1929. Life was hard then yet it produced some good people.

Hard times produce strong people... you know how the rest goes

My friend's dad was a member of a bluegrass band in southern WV, called the Bluegrass 5, and apparently he knew Ricky Skaggs very well.
I went over one evening to hang out and listen to music with my buddy and Ricky Skaggs was there, just hanging out and impromptu playing. One of the most enjoyable evenings I've ever had. He is truly one of the most down to earth people I have ever met. 35 years later and I still remember it vividly.

Docs cover is the BEST.
By the Delmore Brothers in the 30’s. I spent a LOT of time learning a fairly rudimentary version of that great tune.

I have yet to find ANYTHING Doc did that's not the best version of that song.

Possibly my favorite Doc Watson song; top five for sure
