The Alamo fell to the forces of Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna resulting in the deaths of the defenders who held out for 13 days against overwhelming numbers. On the morning of the 6th, After repelling two assaults on the fortified mission ruin, the defending garrison succumbed to the third. All combatants were killed in the battle or executed afterwards. The Mexican army was in turn routed by the forces of General Sam Houston on April 21st at the battle of San Jacinto thus insuring the survival (for the time at least) of the Republic of Texas.
