I recently bought a Vortex Venom 6MOA RDS for my Smith Model 617. I mounted it on the gun with an Alchin mount that fits in the rear sight channel on the top strap of the gun after you remove the stock rear sight. The mount and the sight are both set securely to the gun. My trouble is when I went to sight the rig in this morning, I’m out of vertical adjustment. Specifically, Ive run out of adjustment in the down direction and I can’t bring the POA down any lower to where the POI is. It is shooting about 11” high at 25 yards, and I’m out of adjustment to correct this. So I got to thinking. What if I could shim the sight at the front or rear to adjust the angle at which the sight aligns? What I can’t get through my head is which end I’d want to bring up - the front or rear of the sight? Anyone had any experience like this? Any help would be appreciated!

How is this mounted to the revolver?

I’ve had this happen a bunch of times with the Vortex pistol optics. I sent them back and they sent a new one. Ive since gotten away from them and went with Trijico RMRs. Never had a problem with them.

I’m pretty sure it’s not the sight. It was mounted on my FN 509T dialed in a 25 yards.

Remove it from the mount and re-attach it.

I had an ACOG on an ADM mount that happened with. Quality optic and quality mount. Couldn't figure out why I was out of adjustment and still 6" low at 25. Unmounted. Re-mounted and properly torqued and all was fixed. I can't explain it but it happens.

Thanks guys! I’ll try re-mounting the sight. This is my first try at red dots, so I’m learning. I saw a 1 degree shim online made to go under the Vortex that I ordered in the event that simply re-mounting doesn’t work. I thought maybe it was mounted too high above the bore axis, but I see a lot of people with the same setup I have. Not blaming the Vortex, @amnesia, just was wondering if I did something wrong 😀. I can’t wait to have it dialed in!

Also a coke can thickness is equal to 6 MOA. You can cut a shim out of the can, go get a longer screw and shim the rear of the base to 6 MOA of adjustment per insert.

This is how we did MOA rails on long range rifles before you could buy a 20 MOA mount.
