Picatinny differences?

Tried to mount a scope and it seems that the spaces on the rail are narrower…

Are there different types?

Sounds like a weaver rail. Look similar, different spacing and slot dimensions. Weaver accessories fit picatinny, heavy duty picatinny don't fit weaver.

A little research shows that early carbines have a weaver rail system and newer ones have pocatinny…

You should be able to find rings that will fit. Many do, but usually commercial type rings (like Weaver) and not the heavy duty "mil-spec" marketed ones.
